FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com juLY 17, 2014 • The Courier sun 15 A Better Kind of Cancer Care “We give patients the opportunity to get the very best cancer care right in their own backyards.” Dr. Je rey Schneider has an Ivy League medical education and was an attending physician at a leading New York City cancer center. His commitment to lung cancer patients led him to help create thve rst formal lung cancer screening program on Long Island and to take the lead in a number of breakthrough clinical trials in lung cancer that are achieving remarkable early results. “The patients clearly come rst here at Winthrop. We were rst on Long Island to incorporate a Cancer Navigator for each of the major cancer types to work with patients and their families. No matter what anyone says, no cancer center has everything, but I can say with complete con dence that cancer patients who come to Winthrop are denied nothing. “Sometimes after a treatment a patient won’t feel well and may need to return to the hospital. It’s a big advantage to be right nearby. I’m proud to be here at Winthrop because I believe that we are o ering a better kind of cancer care, closer to home.” €‚ First Street, Mineola, New York ††€‡† • †.‰ŠŠ.WINTHROP • winthrop.org CCAABBLLEEVVIISSIIOONN CCHH 665522 RIDGEWOOD THEATER’S RESIDENTIAL CONVERSION APPROVED BY ERI C JANKIE WICZ @ericjankiewicz [email protected] The Department of Buildings approved a permit to turn the Ridgewood Theater into a multi-purpose building last week, according to Curbed. The approved permit reveals plans to add two more stories to the three-story building that once housed an almost century-old movie theater. The first floor will be an entertainment venue while the other floors will be used to create 50 apartment units. The owner, Bushburg Properties, told Curbed that they are still in the planning stage and that a completion date has not been set. The movie theater is landmarked so any plans require the owner to preserve the façade of the building. The permit shows that there will be 13,638 square feet of commercial space but the venue hasn’t been leased yet. Community leaders are brainstorming ideas for what kind of entertainment would work best in the first floor space. West Nile detected in Douglaston, College Point BY BENJAMIN FANG [email protected] The West Nile virus was recently detected in mosquitoes in Douglaston and College Point, but no human cases have been reported so far, according to city officials. Health Commissioner Mary Bassett encouraged New Yorkers to take precautions, such as wearing mosquito repellent and covering arms and legs while outside. “During warm weather, mosquitoes can breed in any still water that stands for more than four days,” Basset said, “so the most effective way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate standing water.” To address the issue, the health department is applying larvicide in marsh areas and other non-residential areas on July 17, 18 and 21 from 6 to 7 a.m., weather permitting, including Alley Pond Park, the abandoned Flushing Airport in College Point, and Dubos Point and Edgemere Park in Far Rockaway. Not everyone infected by the virus becomes ill, officials said. But it can cause complications, such as neurological diseases, and symptoms like headache, fever, fatigue or sometimes a rash.
