52 THE COURIER SUN • JUNE 12, 2014 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com victoria’s secrets VICTORIA SCHNEPS vschneps@queenscourier.com tweet me @vschneps The circle of life One of my favorite shows, “The Lion King,” has a powerful song that has special meaning for me, especially this past week. It’s “They Live in You.” The lyrics are, “Have faith … they live in your refl ection … they live grandson Jonah, too. On Monday at the Golf Outing, recalled my daughter Lara,School. She became the focus of my life, searching for years for help for her. Lara passed peacefully when she was 17, but she lives on in my heart and in the hearts of our family and in all the people her struggle affected. Then this week we “celebrated” the life of my daughter Elizabeth’s husband Sam Jonah, wearing his dad’s hat, with his half brother Evan, his sister and his mom Kaddish,in Las Vegas, his brother and Sam’s son from a previous marriage, both of whom live in Los Angeles, and our immediate family. It was eerie for me to hear Sam’s father. When I spoke I reminded Jonah about his favorite show, “The Lion King,” and the song we have listened to repeatedly while he site where my “Elsa” from “Frozen” delighted the children as the words of the song say. I was happy to see that he had a little smile grow on his face as I spoke. What was so powerful but a bittersweet day was bringing all of my children and their children together and now for Jonah and Addison, a big “brother” Evan, who Jonah fell in love with. Each family member made us stronger to bear the sadness of Sam’s loss. And then the circle of life kicked in. It was Addison’s third birthday and the very next day was fi lled with laughter and joy. Addison had her little friends, her geographically distant family and her cousins at a gymnastic center party. The children fl ew through the air on trampolines, jumped into a bin of foam balls, and slid down blow-up slides. The phenomenon of the movie “Frozen,” adored by my Addison and I think every child in the world, has as its star Elsa, a beautiful blonde with fl owing braids. Elizabeth hired an “Elsa” to come to the party and we took endless photos of her with the children who were enthralled! What fun! So great joy surrounded us as sadness had on another day. The circle of life! What a roller coaster, but I have my seatbelt on... pow- Coal fi red pizza comes to Great Neck Anthony Bruno believes in KISS — Keep It Simple Sweetheart — and so his fast-growing national chain, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, does that with a menu of traditional and specialty pizzas that make use Although you visit for the many unique pizzas there are also coal fi red roasted chicken wings served with caramelized onions and focaccia bread, the best I ever had — meaty and crispy. In addition, a good choice is the pork ribs, which fell off the bone. They are roasted in Anthony’s Coal Fired Oven. The ribs are spiced with garlic, rosemary and vinegar peppers in white wine, delicious. There are lunch specials from $5.99 with sandwiches added to their 12 different toppings for their famous pizza. Try it, you’ll love it, too. They’re open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. In our tradition, we had an “unveiling” of the tombstone bearing his name. It was covered with a veil, which was removed as we gathered at the gravesite to say a prayer for the dead. Elizabeth had invited Sam’s mom, who lives Elizabeth wanted her 5-year-old Jonah to hear from people dear to her their memories of his lost travels with me in my car. What’s great for me is that he has learned to press a button that automatically plays the disc. Then I can turn a wheel to select the powerful song “They Live in You.” And so with the sun shining down on our small family group at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery daughter Lara and now his dad are buried, I reminded Jonah that his father lives in him — just “refl ection” in his grown son — both his looks and the sound of his voice are Sam’s. Even Jonah looks just like his father. of the highest-quality ingredients, from the cheese to the imported plum tomatoes. He does it all at reasonable prices and family-friendly environment and service. He lives up to his P.R. hype. I took my two grandchildren and my daughter to the chain’s newest location in Great Neck on busy Northern Boulevard. There is outdoor seating but we chose to sit inside near the French doors. The wooden tables and sports memorabilia on the walls with TVs around the room makes for a warm, inviting, relaxed environment. When you visit a restaurant with children, speedy service is essential. So of course we ordered their signature coal fi red cheese pie but fi rst we asked for their famous meatballs, the children’s favorite. The restaurant doesn’t serve pasta, but the kids devoured the meatballs in record time and asked for more! So we had a second portion delivered to the table. I paired them with Anthony’s “Classic Italian Salad.” The family-size portion is good for sharing. We added Gorgonzola cheese for an extra “bite”.
