CULLEN [email protected] Soon, school bells will be ringing. Officials held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new elementary school in Ozone Park on Tuesday, May 14. The facility will hold nearly 450 students and open next year. Councilmember Eric Ulrich, representatives for State Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assembymember Mike Miller along with officials from the School Construction Authority led the ceremony for P.S. 316 at 90-07 101st Avenue. The $38 million project is on the site formerly occupied by St. Stanislaus Catholic elementary school. P.S. 316 will accommodate students from prekindergarten through fifth grade. CULLEN [email protected] Curtains up! St. Mary Gate of Heaven Church in Ozone Park produced a showing of “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” from Friday, May 10 to Saturday, May 11. It featured nearly 100 students from first to eighth grade. Production began in January. Gate of Heaven alum Vinny Napolitano directed the show, which ran through the weekend. Frank Gulluscio, the show’s producer, said each night drew around 500 spectators and roars of applause for the familiar tunes. “The production was excellent,” he said. “Someone said to me, ‘This was like a Broadway production.’” During the Friday night show, Gulluscio said he counted more than 100 kids sitting on the floor in front of the stage singing along to some of the show’s notable songs. “It was really a fun show,” he said. Gurdip Multani, 17, was charged with reckless endangerment, assault and speeding, according to the DA, on Saturday, May 11. He was arraigned the following day with bail set at $25,000. Multani reportedly lost control of the white Honda he was driving on Cross Bay Boulevard, about a mile from the foot of the Joseph P. Addabbo Bridge, and crashed into two other cars. According to a DA report, the driver was going more than 100 MPH when he careened over the grassy median before 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10. There were six people in the car, police said, one of whom suffered a broken arm, leg and hip. Ten people were injured in the crash, with three victims reportedly hospitalized with critical injuries. Multani’s Honda split in two. Windows in the car were blown than 100 mph. out, with parts of the vehicle and personal items scattered along the roadway. An orange work vest with an MTA logo was draped over the driver seat. A similar vest was folded on the ground near the car’s smashed trunk.
