Woodside man charged
with murder after stabbing
his mother to death: DA
A Woodside man has been charged
with murder aft er allegedly slashing his
78-year-old mother with a kitchen knife
on Friday, April 24, District Attorney
Melinda Katz announced on Th ursday.
David Galicia, 48, stated that he
didn’t know why he stabbed Carmelita
Cabansag, his mother, but that he was
compelled to when he woke up on the
morning of the crime, according to Katz.
Galicia has been charged with second-degree
murder and criminal possession of a
weapon in the fourth degree. He faces up to
25 years to life in prison if convicted.
Police arrived at Galicia’s home aft er
receiving a 911 call to fi nd a trail of blood
from the entrance of the building to the
apartment where Galicia and Cabansag
lived, according to the DA.
Inside the apartment, police found
Cabansag unresponsive on the kitchen
fl oor, with a bloody meat cleaver beside
her, according to Katz.
Galicia was in the apartment and taken
to a nearby hospital for apparent self-infl
icted wounds, according to police.
At the hospital, Galicia told police he
had stabbed his mother aft er waking up
and going to the bathroom, although he
wasn’t sure why, according to the DA.
Galicia is set to appear in court on May
28.

dispute outside Woodside

Police are
investigating a
double shooting
on a Woodside
block on the night
of Saturday, May 2,
that left two men
injured.
Authorities said
the bullets fl ew at
about 7:50 p.m. on May
2 in front of a grocery
store at 51-15
Broadway.
Witnesses said
they had heard a verbal
argument, followed by gunshots. When
offi cers from the 114th Precinct arrived
on the scene, they found a 32-year-old
man shot in the stomach, and a 23-yearold
man with a gunshot wound to his left
thigh.
Paramedics rushed both victims to
Elmhurst Hospital. Th eir injuries are not
life-threatening, authorities said.
No arrests have been made, and the
investigation is ongoing, police said.

Howard Beach man dies of
alleged heroin overdose in
106th Precinct cell: NYPD
A Howard Beach man who crashed his
car while allegedly under the infl uence
of heroin died in the 106th Precinct’s cell
area on Th ursday, April 30.
Nicholas Cammarata, 58, was driving a
brown 1998 Chevrolet Blazer near Cross
Bay Boulevard and Linden Boulevard
in Ozone Park around 2 p.m., when he
crashed, according to the NYPD. When
police arrived at the scene, they found
that Cammarata appeared to have no
signs of trauma from the crash but was
unconscious and unresponsive, police say.
Cammarata was administered
NARCAN by EMS personnel and became
conscious, according to the authorities.
While on the trip to Jamaica Hospital,
Cammarata muttered to an EMT that he
had taken heroin, police sources say.
Cammarata was admitted to the hospital
and placed under arrest around 3:15
p.m. aft er being charged with operating a
motor vehicle while impaired with drugs,
according to the NYPD.
About four hours later, around 7 p.m.,
Cammarata was released from the hospital
and taken to the 106th Precinct for
processing, cops say.
Cammarata was fi ngerprinted at 8 p.m.
and put inside a holding cell, according
to police. Around 9:20 p.m., offi cers from
the precinct came to the cell to transfer
Cammarata only to discover he was
unconscious and unresponsive, according
to the authorities.
EMS personnel arrived at the precinct
to try and revive him, but they were
unsuccessful, according to the police.
Cammarata was pronounced dead at the
precinct at 10:08 p.m., according to the
NYPD.
Th e medical examiner will determine
the cause of Cammarata’s death.
An investigation by the NYPD’s Force
Investigation Division is ongoing.
