FRANCIS PREP ART DEPARTMENT MOUNTS YEAR-END, DAY-LONG SHOW Prep students brave the weather at a recent award ceremony at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Art Department of St. Francis Preparatory School has had an extraordinary year, given succesful shows in December, January, and April, as well as numerous students receiving recognition at not only the local, but the national level. On Saturday, May 9th, the efforts of the entire department will be on display beginning at 2PM with a gallery showing in Prep’s recently built, state-of-the-art Art Education facility. This portion of the show represents student work from over twenty-five electives Prep’s Art Department offers. The best work from freshmen to senior levels will be exhibited. The St. Francis Prep Chamber Orchestra will also be performing on the rooftop and light refreshments will be served. There will then be a presentation in Prep’s Brother Ralph Clifford Memorial Auditorium beginning at 4pm. This portion of the day will feature a fashion show, films, animation, acting, and dance performances. This will also be the Art Faculty’s opportunity to recognize the numerous standout student-artists, as Prep’s National Art Honor Society Induction will take place during the show. For faculty member Marc Salmin, the show is “absolutely a big deal.” Prep alum and current Art teacher Anthony Biondolillo is thrilled to be able to exhibit his students’ best work, as well as see seniors receive well-earned awards. He sees the event as a chance for the best of the best to shine. Fellow faculty member and Prep alum Dianna Shmerykowsky echoed a similar sentiment that that student have invested a great deal of time cultivating their talents, and the event provides a nice goodbye. Many students will be continuing their Art studies collegiately, and at least 25 Art programs will be welcoming Prep students in the fall. The Art faculty all agrees though very grueling, the event is very rewarding. Three of the six faculty members are alumni of the program, and clearly see it as a chance to give back to the program. St. Francis Prep’s Spring Arts Festival is Saturday, titled, “We’ll Always Have Paris,” May 9th at 2PM (gallery) and 4PM (auditorium). Admission for the entire day is $5. St. Francis Prep is located at 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard in Fresh Meadows.
