Free VIN etching The Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) and the 102nd Precinct will host a free event to protect residents’ property on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the WRBA’s office (84-20 Jamaica Avenue), residents will be able to register electronics and other valuables with the NYPD, enroll their vehicles in anti-auto theft programs and set up appointments for vehicle identification number (VIN) etchings. Officers will engrave an identifiable serial number on portable valuables such as computers, bicycles and cell phones. The NYPD will add those serial numbers and the owners’ names to their records. Etchings make it easier to return stolen or lost property to the rightful owner. They also make it more difficult for thieves to sell engraved valuables. The event is part of the NYPD’s Operation ID program, a citywide initiative that has proven effective. “This is an excellent chance to safeguard some of your most valuable possessions, which also happen to be some of the most inviting targets for thieves,” said WRBA president Edward Wendell. “We’re very pleased to continue our strong relationship with the 102nd Precinct to serve Woodhaven and the surrounding community.” Residents will also have the chance to register their vehicles in the NYPD’s Combat Auto Theft (CAT) and Help End Auto Theft (HEAT) programs. They help safeguard vehicles by allowing the police to stop your vehicle if it’s being driven at an unusual time or by an unusual person. If you have questions, contact the WRBA at info@ woodhaven-nyc.org or call 718- 296-3735 and leave a message. 112TH PRECINCT Rego Park and Forest Hills Seek violent robbery suspect Police are looking for a suspect who robbed and assaulted a woman inside a Queens apartment building.
