The Ridgewood Glendale Middle Village Maspeth (RGMVM) Little League officially kicked off its season, and the kids are ready to play. The league held its annual opening day festivities on Saturday, April 6. Players from all over southwest Queens, ages 5 to 16, came out to show their stuff and start the season off right. Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley was also in attendance, and welcomed everyone back to a new season. “Everybody participated and everything was great,” said Pat Piteo, RGMVM President. The regular season started the day after, on Sunday, April 7 and will go through June. The league, the oldest charter little league in the borough, is in its 62nd year and invites kids of all varying abilities. “You don’t have to be a great ball player, you can just be someone who wants to participate,” said Piteo. “It gives everyone a chance to play and have fun.” Piteo, nearing two decades with RGMVM, said that a great aspect to the league is that it also gives players a chance to meet other kids from the community and form lifelong friendships. Many coaches and others involved have been there for years, and breed new generations of players. “We’re a part of the community,” he said. “We play, and we give back.” THE COURIER/Photos by Mike DiBartolmeo
