REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD LAWYER UP
 By: Janet Nina Esagoff, Esq.
All people are equal under the law and everyone deserves the same chance to obtain legal justice. Having a
lawyer assist you to assert your rights and defenses can be a tough but necessary decision. Lawyers can help
you navigate the legal system, which can be very tricky, and expensive. While there are definitely times you
really don’t “need” a lawyer, you are well advised to have one when it is a “matter of life and death”, e.g.
 criminal defense.
What are the main roles of lawyers?
 • Represent clients in courts, before government agencies, and in private legal matters.
 • Conduct research and analysis of legal problems.
 • Advise clients of risk, exposure, rights and obligations.
What skills do the best lawyers have?
Lawyers are trained to do critical reading and analysis, synthesis of voluminous data and legal research.
Lawyers are objective and can offer sound advice and judgment, unclouded by emotion, unlike their clients
who often are amidst a dispute. Most attorneys are skilled in negotiating contracts and settlements.
Litigation attorneys examine claims and defenses to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting a lawsuit. Transactional attorneys
prepare and draft legal documents e.g. wills, deeds, mortgages, leases etc. Of course, you can go without a lawyer for some of these tasks,
but often, it is better to “lawyer up” in the beginning and pay for some expert advice rather than be remorseful at the end, or when issues
rise up and it is too late.
What qualities makes a good lawyer?
Passion for the job is an important trait. When your lawyer loves what they do, it really shows. Compassion for clients is also key. Someone
who cares about feelings, and outcomes is a great asset to have at your side. Great communication skills are also critically important. You
want a professional who responds to your concerns, and provides regular updates. As for knowledge of the law, a good lawyer is not a
know-it-all, but they are able to find out answers to questions and do research to be up to date.
