With many leagues across the New York metropolitan area cancelling their weekend schedule, the BWG teams met up on Saturday, March 18, to clean their field at Aviator Sports Complex so they could host their regular U.S. Academy games. With a little help, and a lot of teamwork, the fields were cleared to play on Sunday. BWG teams had a great showing in their games, as the U18 team blanked Empire United 3-0, and the U16 defeated Empire United 3-1. With the win, the U16 team moved to the top of the Northeast Division. At the younger level, the 14 Academy team played to a scoreless draw against New York Soccer Club, while the 13 Academy team lost 3-1. Citi Field likely to host the 2018 NHL Winter Classic featuring the Rangers: report BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI smonteverdi@qns.com @smont76 The 2018 National Hockey League (NHL) Winter Classic could be coming to Queens. According to Newsday, plans to hold the league’s signature outdoor game at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, are close to being finalized. The outdoor game, which takes place on or around New Year’s Day, would reportedly take place between the New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. The league’s annual event, which celebrates its 10th anniversary next year, has never been held in New York City. Yankee Stadium hosted two NHL “Stadium Series” games in Jan. 2014, where the New York Rangers played against the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders. This year’s Winter Classic was held on Jan. 2 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO (home of baseball’s Cardinals), where the St. Louis Blues took on the Chicago Blackhawks.
