FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT WWW.QNS.COM MARCH 16, 2017 • THE COURIER SUN 11 A misogynist in the White House Since March is Women’s History Month, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, it seems like a golden opportunity to examine the outcome of the last presidential election and what the future holds for women under a Trump Administration. The United States is 50.8 percent women, according to July 2015 Census data. New York is 51.4 percent women and Queens is 51.5 percent women. Yet here we are – a country, state and borough that is majority female with a President who, by his own behavior, could not unfairly be classified as a misogynist. Donald Trump has a long career of hateful rhetoric against women, from saying Carly Fiorina didn’t have the right face to be president, to calling Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman” during a nationally televised debate. Like the other creatures of Trump’s imagination - the terrorist Muslim, the “inner city” African-American, or the rapist Mexican – women are held outside the realm of the normal, except when they play the part of wife or eye-candy. Though he was once prochoice, Trump has since backtracked in order to gain the support of the radicals in his party. Now he supports “state’s rights” in the matter. If that sounds anodyne, the whole point of the Roe v. Wade decision was to limit the power of the states over women’s access to abortion. While his pick for the Supreme Court Neil Gorsuch has not made a clear statement on the matter, he is a narrow interpreter of the constitution and likely to concur in the “state’s rights” view of abortion. Meanwhile, the recent healthcare proposal from the Republican party goes on the offense against women’s health, cutting off Medicaid funding from any organization offering abortions to its clients. This provision would instantly deprive Planned Parenthood of 40% of its funding, even though the vast majority of its activities are oriented towards family planning and screening for diseases like THE IMPACT breast and cervical cancer. Some 78% of Planned Parenthood patients have incomes below 150% of the Federal poverty level. Defunding Planned Parenthood is an attack on the health of poor women, plain and simple. Trumpcare will also deny its paltry tax credits to any private insurance plan that covers abortion. In the huge gap created by the loss of Obamacare’s subsidies these tax credits will shape the health insurance landscape, because health insurers will have to tailor their plans to qualify for tax credits. Thus, Trumpcare will actively disincentivize health insurers from offering women’s health services. On International Women’s Day, Trump tweeted that “no one has more respect for women,” than he does, and was rightfully ridiculed for his hypocrisy. Through word and deed, Trump has demonstrated that his vision for America is one where women are second-class citizens. It’s disgusting and frightening and we cannot allow it to become a reality. In this, the month of the woman, we are reminded that we must fight for real liberation. The Impact is State Senator James Sanders’ weekly column explaining President Trump’s policies and their effects on Southeast Queens.
