Offer expires 3/30/15 QCP Head of firefighters to lead Rockaway St. Pat’s parade Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of New York has been named grand marshal of the 40th Annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade to be held on March 7 in Rockaway Beach. The parade, which attracts up to 50,000 spectators, starts at 1 p.m. at Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue, then continues east on Newport Avenue and down Rockaway Beach Boulevard. “It is a great honor and privilege to be selected to lead the march for the 40th Annual Queens St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” Cassidy said. “This event and what it means to generations of Americans of Irish heritage can simply not be measured.” Also marching in the parade will be Mayor de Blasio, who skipped the event last year. At the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Sunnyside on March 1, de Blasio called his decision not to march in Rockaway last year “an error on our part.” Cassidy, first elected UFA president in 2002, is the longest serving president in the union’s nearly 100-year existence. “Steve Cassidy is a prominent Irish labor leader who proudly promotes his Irish heritage and culture,” Queens Parade Committee Chairman Michael Benn said. “Given this is the 150th anniversary of the FDNY and the significant contributions of New York City Firefighters across our city and locally, this was a natural selection.”
