Two honorees at Geraldo golf & tennis classic this May
Life’s WORC/Th e Family Center for
Autism will honor one of its directors
during the annual Geraldo Rivera
Golf & Tennis Classic on Th ursday,
May 24, at Seawane Country Club in
Hewlett Harbor.
Tariq Khan of Hewlett Harbor, a
member of the Life’s WORC/Th e
Family Center for Autism board of
directors, will be this year’s guest of
honor. He arrived from Pakistan as
an immigrant with $300 in his pocket,
has earned prominence as a community
leader on Long Island, and
respect among his peers in business.
For many years, Khan developed
enterprises in the Long Island/NYC
region in grocery and convenience
stores. He still maintains a business presence
owning/operating several Long
Island convenience/fuel retail locations.
Khan is also engaged in regional
commercial real estate and property
management. He is active in a
number of trade, industry, and business
organizations as an advocate for
economic development. In 2003, he
was honored by the New York City
Council as one of NYC’s most outstanding
Pakistani-American citizens.
Comparable to his passion for
entrepreneurship, Khan is also passionate
about golf. He can be found
many times a week at Lawrence
Country Club where he is a member,
or oft en attending the greater
New York region’s many charity
golf outings, where he is a generous
contributor. Khan is also known for
organizing abundantly successful golf
tournaments on Long Island. He has
served as “the guest of honor” at these
events on a number of occasions.
For this Geraldo Rivera outing,
Khan reached out to his Hewlett
Harbor neighbor, golfi ng buddy,
and a board member at Lawrence
Country Club, Barry Koff of Long
Beach, to share the “guest of honor”
spotlight.
Similar to Khan, Koff is widely
known on Long Island for his
years logged in ownership of grocery
enterprises, and in real estate. He
regularly plays in competitive senior
amateur golf tournaments.
“Barry Koff and I have played together
in this Geraldo Rivera tournament the
past fi ve years,” Khan said. “Whenever
we play together we enjoy our game
and some laughs. So undertaking the
May 24 event will give Barry and I great
pleasure while bringing some value and
benefi t to Life’s WORC/Th e Family
Center For Autism.”
Generally, the “Geraldo” tournament
has been held at a variety of
Nassau County north shore clubs.
“So the Life’s WORC/Family Center
For Autism golfers and supporters
are in for a special treat this time visiting
one of the fi nest, most prestigious
south shore clubs on Long
Island,” explained Barry Koff .
Life’s WORC/Th e Family Center
For Autism was established 50 years
ago by NYC/LI weekly newspaper
publisher Victoria Schneps with help
from broadcast journalist Rivera,
who launched this fundraiser tournament
Th e Garden City-headquartered
non-profi t agency provides a variety
of services to some 2000 people
with developmental disabilities and
autism. It is an employer of more
than 1200, with a presence in Suff olk,
Nassau, Queens, and Manhattan.
“Th rough both Tariq Khan and
Barry Koff working with Geraldo-
--we know that May 24 will be a
huge success,” said Matt Zebatto,
the organization’s assistant executive
director. “Both of our guests of
honor enjoy a widespread following
of friends and business associates.
Th eir enthusiastic commitment
is most welcome.”
