4  THE COURIER SUN  •  JANUARY 19, 2017 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com Probe continues in deadly cop shooting in Laurelton BY ROBERT POZARYCKI rpozarycki@qns.com @robbpoz A man who threatened to stab his mother with a screwdriver at a Laurelton home early in the morning of Jan. 14 was fatally shot by police officers as they struggled to disarm him, law enforcement sources said. Officers from the 113th Precinct went to a home on Westgate Street near Thurston Street at around 3 a.m. on Jan. 14 to investigate a 911 call about a woman screaming from inside the location. When they arrived, authorities said, the uniformed officers heard screaming and encountered a man holding a woman — later determined to be his mother — with a screwdriver while on a small stairwell leading to a rear entrance. According to Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan, the officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but the man refused to do so. They then engaged in a physical struggle with the suspect and were able to free the woman from his clutches. The man, however, kept hold of the screwdriver, and officers continued to struggle with him to get it out of his hands. At one point, they used a Taser to stun the man into submission, but it did not strike the suspect, police said. Two officers then discharged one round each, striking the suspect about the body, he noted. Paramedics brought the man to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was not released pending the ongoing investigation. Queens used car dealer takes a ride to jail for committing sales tax fraud BY ROBERT POZARYCKI rpozarycki@qns.com @robbpoz A Long Island man who owns three different used car dealerships in Jamaica and Woodside allegedly fleeced the state out of more than $330,000 in sales tax revenue over five years, prosecutors announced on Jan. 13. Mamdoh Eltouby, 65, owns Planet Motor Cars Inc. and Hillside Motors LLC, both of which operate at 161-10 Hillside Ave. in Jamaica, and New York Motor Group LLC, which operates at 60-20 Northern Blvd. in Woodside. He was arraigned on charges that he intentionally under-reported more than $3.8 million in sales at his dealership between 2010 and 2015 in order to reduce his state and city tax obligations, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. The fraud was revealed through an investigation conducted by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Criminal Investigation Division with the help of forensic accountants assigned to the Queens District Attorney’s office. “When consumers pay sales taxes they expect those funds to go into the public treasury and not to be pocketed by business owners,” Brown said in a statement on Jan. 13. “These Photo courtesy of PropertyShark types of paper crimes make every New Yorker a victim by cheating the government and the public out of money that is necessary to maintain services and infrastructure.” Eltouby and his companies are charged with the second- and third-degree grand larceny, first-degree falsifying business records and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Eltouby was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on April 7; if convicted, he could serve up to 15 years in prison. If the company is convicted, it may be fined up to $10,000 or twice the amount of the illegal gain, whichever is greater. Cops investigate a mysterious Queens Village stabbing BY ROBERT POZARYCKI rpozarycki@qns.com @robbpoz Detectives are investigating the stabbing of a 30-year-old woman who said she was robbed on a Queens Village street steps from her home on Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement sources said the incident took place at 2:50 p.m. on Jan. 15 in the vicinity of 212th Place and 104th Road. According to police, the victim told detectives she was walking through the area when she was approached by three male suspects who attempted to steal her necklace. Seconds later, authorities said, one of the suspects stabbed the woman three times in the chest, and the robbers fled. Police said the woman walked to her nearby home, and a relative called police. Officers from the 105th Precinct and EMS units responded to the call; the woman was treated at Jamaica Hospital for three small puncture wounds to her chest and later released. Sources familiar with the investigation said there appear to be inconsistencies with the woman’s story, as video evidence obtained from where the stabbing allegedly occurred did not corroborate statements provided to police.
