12  THE COURIER SUN  •  JANUARY 19, 2017 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com police beat COMPILED BY EMILY DAVENPORT AND ROBERT POZARYCKI • Masonry CREEPY COACH GETS UP TO 6 YEARS FOR SEX ABUSE A former volleyball coach at Richmond Hill High School was ordered last week to spend up to six years behind bars for sending X-rated material to an underage student, including a video of himself masturbating, prosecutors announced. Luis Rodriguez, 45, a resident of Freeport, Long Island, was found guilty last December of charges including attempted use of a child in a sexual performance, disseminating indecent materials to minors and endangering the welfare of a child. “The defendant was a trusted coach and teacher. He was someone whom parents believed their children would be safe with. But this defendant violated that trust,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement on Jan. 12. “This coach used an extracurricular school activity to prey on this young victim. This case should serve as a clear and unmistakable warning that law enforcement will arrest and prosecute sexual predators. This defendant is now going to prison as punishment for his actions and to protect society.” Rodriguez coached the girl’s volleyball team and was an attendance teacher at Richmond Hill High School, located at 89-30 114th St., in October 2014, when he first made lewd contact with a then-15-year-old girl and member of the team. According to Brown, Rodriguez contacted the girl multiple times through text message or the FaceTime video chat and sent her sexually explicit messages. He asked the teenager to inappropriately touch herself and to take and send him selfies of her naked. In one instance, law enforcement sources said, Rodriguez expressed his desire to have sex with the girl and also wanted her to give him oral sex. During the same period, authorities “When Only The Best Will Do!” Great Quality, Fair Pricing! noted, Rodriguez sent to the victim’s cellphone a video of him masturbating. Members of the 102nd Precinct Detective Squad, after being alerted to the lewd activity, arrested Rodriguez on Nov. 7, 2014. 106th Precinct Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill THIEVES FEIGN CAR TROUBLE TO ROB GOOD SAMARITAN They not only robbed a man of his property, but perhaps of his good will. Cops are asking for the public’s help in tracking down three thieves who duped a man into helping them fixed an allegedly disabled vehicle, then robbed and assaulted him in South Ozone Park last month. Police said the robbery occurred at 6:35 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2016, in the vicinity of Rockaway Boulevard and 131st Street, when the three suspects got the attention of the 58-year-old male victim and claimed to have a dead car battery. He stopped to attempt to help them after seeing one of the individuals holding jumper cables. Then, according to authorities, one of the suspects — described as a Hispanic male between 30 and 35 years of age — grabbed the victim’s wallet, leading to a physical struggle. During the fracas, the suspect bit the victim’s hand, and a second suspect — described as a black male — then pulled out a small knife and cut the victim’s hand and nose. Police said the two men and a third individual, a female with a light complexion, then took the victim’s credit cards, $800 in cash and his cellphone, then fled the scene in a black Hyundai. The theft was reported to the 106th Precinct; the victim was treated for his injuries. Detectives later obtained security camera images of two women using the victim’s credit cards to make purchases at a Bath and Body Works store and a Champs apparel store. Anyone with information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS, visit their website, www.nypdcrimestoppers. com, or send a text message to 274637 (CRIMES), then enter TIP577. All calls and messages are kept confidential. FAKE FIREFIGHTER BUSTED FOR JFK PARKING SCAM Some people will go to great lengths to park their vehicle at John F. Kennedy Airport, as law enforcement agents learned last week. At 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 10, Port Authority Police found Jose Vasquez, 51, parked in a no-standing area in front of Terminal 8 at JFK. When an officer approached Vasquez, he presented Fire Department credentials to the officer. Vasquez showed the officer an ID card and shield, and Vasquez’s car, a 2017 Toyota Sienna, displayed a placard that read “Fire Dept. City of NY.” Vasquez claimed to be an FDNY employee on official work business when the officers questioned him. The officer had known that Vasquez had been previously arrested for unlawful solicitation. An investigation concluded that the ID card, shield and placard had been forged. Vasquez was arrested and his car was impounded. He has been charged with criminal impersonation, criminal possession of a forged instrument, criminal trespassing and trespassing. 102th Precinct Kew Gardens, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven
