Richmond Hill vigil honors victim of first Queens homicide in 2017 BY EMILY DAVENPORT edavenport@qns.com @QNS The victim of Queens’ first homicide of 2017 won’t be forgotten anytime soon. State Senator James Sanders Jr. held a candlelight vigil last Friday night, Jan. 6, in Richmond Hill to honor the memory of Rocky Kalisaran at the location where he was gunned down. Kalisaran, 31, was fatally shot on Monday, Jan. 2, at 3:20 a.m. during an attempted robbery. He was visiting New York from Guyana so he could attend the funeral of his grandmother. Kalisaran’s brother was also shot during the incident but survived the attack. “I stand with the victim’s family, the Guyanese community and all people of good will to condemn this senseless act of violence that ended in the death of Rocky Kalisaran and injured his brother,” Sanders said. “The start of a new year is supposed to be filled with joy and hope, but instead we have a time of tragedy and loss. I call upon the perpetrators of this heinous crime to turn themselves in. We will not put up with this kind of madness. You will be caught, and you will be brought to justice.” Kalisaran’s mother, Anita Kalisaran, and his sister Vanny were the first to light candles at the vigil. They were surrounded by dozens of supporters who joined in prayer and song, and called for unity, justice and peace. Attendees laid white roses and lit candles near the shooting site and they released white balloons at the conclusion of the vigil. “This is something that no country wishes, because we know as a people, we are peaceful,” said Barbara Atherly, Guyana’s Consul General in New York. “The circumstances under which Rocky met his death is certainly troubling for the community and for the society as a whole. I can understand the devastation that this death had brought to the family and to the wider community.” The light from the candles placed at a memorial honoring the victim cast a warm glow on the cold evening. Captain Brian Bohannon Jr., the commanding officer of the 106th Precinct, was in attendance at the vigil. He reported at the vigil that while no one has been arrested at this time, there are two people of interest in connection to the homicide. They are described as black males in their 20s and it is believed that they fled to South Carolina.
