Commissioner Jonnel Doris visited the Myrtle Avenue
Business Improvement District in Ridgewood to promote
Small Business Saturday on November 27th. Small
Business Saturday is a nationwide campaign to promote
the theme Shop Small/Shop Local by American Express
started in 2010. Commissioner Doris joined the Myrtle
Avenue BID at the 71st Avenue Plaza where the BID held
an event that included giveaways and balloons for the kids,
a chance to win from Myrtle Avenue stores gift certificates,
live music by NYC Brass Entourage and general information
about retail and service establishments in the BID.
Commissioner Doris joined Theodore M. Renz, the Executive
Director of the Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District
for a walking tour of part of the district that included a visit
to a number of businesses so the Commissioner could hear
first hand from owners about issues they are facing now post
pandemic. The news media outlets interviewed Commissioner
Doris, Mr. Renz and a number of merchants as well.
Commissioner Doris message was clear in the importance
of supporting local businesses since money spent at the
local level stays in the community and these businesses
also give back to the communities they serve.
Small Business Saturday was part of the Myrtle Avenue
BID’s Fall Sidewalk Sale Days which also served to kick
off the Holiday Season on Myrtle Avenue.
The Myrtle Avenue BID hopes that residents will shop
local and support our over 340 plus retail & service
establishment that serve the communities of Greater
Ridgewood.
Shoppers will enjoy our traditional holiday lights and
music throughout the holiday season. Many stores will
be open late during the holiday season. Check individual
stores for hours.
The Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District (BID)
was established in 1988 to provide supplemental services
and programs for an enhanced shopping environment on
Myrtle Avenue from Wyckoff Avenue to Fresh Pond Road
and contiguous side streets in Ridgewood.
The BID helps to make Myrtle Avenue a great place to
shop and do business by keeping the streets clean, safe,
green and lively with programs and events. As the voice
of the local merchant and real estate community, we work
to ensure that the retail mix is meeting shopper needs,
and that the Myrtle Avenue is an ideal place for new and
thriving businesses.
The Myrtle Avenue BID provides daily Sanitation
Sweeping Services and Graffiti Removal, Beautification
(weeding & seasonal plantings), Marketing & Promotion
(sales & other events, advertising, etc), Holiday Lights,
Streetscape Improvements (benches & other amenities)
and Security as needed.
Over the years the BID also collaborated with many other
community based organizations & City, State & Federal
Agencies in making Myrtle Avenue & Ridgewood a better
Community.
