OBITUARIES
JULIA A. YUGUEROS died Thursday, Oc.t 14, at the age of 92. She
was the beloved mother of Katherine A. Yungueros, Dorothy Beck
and the late Lynn Petrizzo and cherished grandmother of David,
Thomas, Christopher, Alison and Lauren. Funeral services will be
held at Papavero Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 21, followed by
interment at St. John Crematory, Middle Village, under the direction
of Papavero Funeral Home, Maspeth.

RAFAELA MARTINEZ died Friday, Oct. 15, at the age of 93. She
was the beloved mother of Rafaela Martinez and the late Fausto
“Tony” Martinez and John Martinez, loving grandmother of Daniel
Gomez, Richard Gomez, Michelle Martinez, Jennifer Rodriguez and
Marisol Pietro and cherished great-grandmother of David Gomez,
Andrew Gomez, Jonathan Cruz, Todd McDaniels and Jaden Pietro.
Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary’s Church on Monday,
Oct. 18, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetary, Woodside,
under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, Maspeth.

EMILIO P. SAMANO died Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the age of 84.
He was the beloved husband of Iluminada Villao Samano, loving
father of Carolina Samano and Marissa Li, father-in-law of Wayne
McEachern and Chi Li, cherished grandfather of Lauren Nicole,
Chloe Lindsay and Emery Emilio, dear brother of Erlinda Samano
and brother-in-law of Filipina Fe Pastrana. He is also survived by
many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and members of
the Villao extended family. Mass of Christian Burial was offered
at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, Oct. 16, followed by private
cremation at Fresh Pond Crematory, Middle Village, under the
direction of Papavero Funeral Home, Maspeth.

Sister Theresa Torsone, a member of the School Sisters of Notre
Dame, died on October 14, 2021, at The Watermark in Bridgeport,
Connecticut, at the age of 80. She was born in Poughkeepsie, New
York, on April 1, 1940, the beloved daughter of John and Antoinette
Torsone. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel elementary school
where she was taught by the wonderful Sisters who would become
her community. After attending Mt. St. Mary’s High School in
Newburgh, New York, she entered religious life in 1959.
After pronouncing her vows as an SSND in 1960, as Sister Johnette, she taught
at St. Anthony School in Passaic, New Jersey. In 1980 Sister Theresa began over
three decades at St. Matthias School, Ridgewood, New York. In her retirement
she resided at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, Connecticut until the community
moved to The Watermark, in August 2021.
Sister Theresa was a master teacher specializing in math. She had an enormous
impact on hundreds of children and their families. She was pre-deceased by her
parents, her brother Michael Torsone and her brother-in-law Robert Valentino.
Surviving family members include sisters, Michele Valentino, Anita Freer, Johnna
Torsone, brothers-in-law David Freer and John McKeon, and her many nieces
and nephews to whom she was especially devoted and who love her dearly.
Sister was a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees, and never missed listening to or
watch their games. On her 50th anniversary as a School Sister of Notre Dame
she was honored by Derek Jeter and the Yankee organization on Sister Theresa
Torsone Day at the stadium. Also special to her were the summer family
gatherings at Galway Lake, New York where she was dubbed by her grand
nieces and nephews as The Leader of the Lake.
Wake will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Danbury Road, Wilton from 4
to 7 PM on Friday, October 22. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Saturday,
October 23 at 11 AM. Burial will take place at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel,
Connecticut.
Memorial contributions may be made to the School sisters of Notre Dame
Development Office, 345 Belden Hill Road, Wilton, CT 06897. Funeral
arrangements are being handled by Cornell Memorial Funeral Home, Danbury,
Connecticut.
