The first blaze broke out in Middle Village at 7:46 p.m. on Aug. 25 at a two-story home on 66th Drive between Pleasantview Street and 73rd Place. According to the FDNY, the fire started in the basement and quickly spread throughout the entire structure. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze and were treated at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Fire Department sources said. No civilians were injured. The blaze was brought under control at 8:16 p.m., but 10 minutes later, Fire Department units rushed over to a two-story building that caught fire at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and 69th Street in Glendale. As in the first blaze, the flames ignited in the basement of the structure and spread to the first floor. One firefighter was removed to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment of minor injuries; no residents were injured, Fire Department sources said. Firefighters brought the Glendale blaze under control at about 9:41 p.m. The causes of both fires are under investigation by FDNY marshals.
