HEADING
Trump crossed an irreversible line
“The leader of the Free World
basically genufl ected before
Putin and got nothing in
return. I am an American before I am
a Republican, and today I am embarrassed
to say the very least.”
Councilman Eric Ulrich, the lone
elected Republican lawmaker representing
Queens, tweeted those
remarks in the wake of President
Donald Trump’s odious press conference
with Russian President Vladimir
Putin following their closed-door July
16 summit in Helsinki, Finland.
Trump essentially dismissed the
fi ndings of the American law enforcement
and intelligence communities
investigating Russia’s meddling in the
2016 elections. It was a slap in the face
to our entire justice system.
His inference that the U.S. was
somehow partly to blame for Russian
interference, his embrace of Putin — a
master manipulator and a despot who
jails and kills his opponents — and his
acceptance of Putin’s denials were
equally repulsive.
On Tuesday, Trump tried to clarify
his remarks before Putin, insisting
that he misspoke, but few believe
him. He who hesitates to defend those
charged with protecting us is truly lost.
In Queens, the borough where
Trump was born and raised, the 45th
president of our country still has plenty
of supporters despite his many troubling
actions, including the separation
of children who illegally crossed the
border with their families; the travel
ban targeting people of a certain faith;
and his constant assaults on the press.
How can Republicans in Queens, in
New York and in the United States still
defend Donald Trump aft er he bowed
to Putin?
The Twitter response from Ulrich,
a fine public servant, mirrors the
verbal outrage from many Republican
lawmakers across the country. They
said, in various words, that they were
disappointed, troubled, outraged by
Trump’s remarks before Putin.
They’ve wagged their fi ngers before
over Trump’s indiscretions — and
predictably, nothing changed.
So what are Republicans going to do
this time?
Will they continue to call for the
Mueller investigation’s termination?
Will they continue to stay silent as
Trump slanders that investigation as
a “witch hunt,” and calls coverage of
it “fake news”? Will they do anything
to stop Trump from obstructing the
investigation entirely?
Will they continue to support this
president’s policies and Supreme
Court justice nominees, no questions
asked?
Will they do anything to protect
and defend the separation of powers
in federal government?
It’s time for Republicans everywhere
to distance themselves from
Trump, and unite with Democrats and
independents in preserving the norms
upon which our republic has thrived
for more than 240 years.
As President Theodore Roosevelt
once remarked, “To announce that
there must be no criticism of the
President, or that we are to stand by
the President, right or wrong, is not
only unpatriotic and servile, but is
morally treasonable to the American
public.”
