PLAYGROUND SPRUCED UP Harrison At Helm Of F.H. I thank by Noah Zuss A new central green and performance space were opened following a $1.275 million renovation to the eastern parts of Murray Playground in Long Island City, the Queens Parks Commissioner announced Wednesday, July 2. Dorothy Lewandowski formally opened the new space to concerts and other events, with funds to complete the work provided by Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, according to a statement from the Parks Department. The playground is named for the late John F. Murray, a NYC Parks recreation supervisor and lifelong Queens resident. Reportedly, the blaze ignited at about 9:30 p.m. on the top floor of a residence on Wilson Avenue near Schaefer Street. More than 10 Fire Department units rushed to the scene along with the 83rd Precinct and EMS units. Firefighters used two hose lines to contain the fire and bring it under control, an FDNY source said. (photo: Allen Epstein) A New Top Cop At 112 Precinct Capt. Judith Harrison took the reins at the precinct covering Forest Hills and Rego Park, replacing Capt. Thomas Conforti, who now commands the 109th Precinct based in Flushing. Conforti had been the 112th Precinct’s top cop since September 2012. According to the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau, Harrison joined the NYPD in April 1997, with her first assignment at the 103rd Precinct in Jamaica. She also had stints at the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood; the 109th Precinct and the 115th Precinct based in Jackson Heights. Harrison additionally served with the NYPD Police Academy, Patrol Borough Queens North and the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau. She quickly rose through the ranks in the years since and was promoted to sergeant in September 2002, lieutenant in 2006 and captain in 2013. Harrison previously graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in business management. On the 112th Precinct Community Council’s Facebook page, its president, Heidi Harrison Chain, thanked Conforti for his service and wished Captain Harrison well in her tenure at the precinct.
