TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2014 • 10 AREA DROWNS IN BOOZE alcohol-fueled street fights negatively affecting the quality-oflife in the surrounding neighborhoods. “They’re not being good neighbors. (There are) fights, public urination and combinative behaviors. There is an attitude, they don’t have any respect for their neighbors,” Schilero said. Prior to the Public Safety Committee recommending a letter be sent to other community boards to assess if they are having a similar issue, Schilero read aloud the five new applications for new licenses received within the last month. Several were still missing the necessary certification of occupancy permits to complete their applications and were denied, but the board can get 20 in a month, and it can be overwhelming, according to Schilero “A letter has to be sent out; we’re just overwhelmed,” she said. The community board is charged with getting feedback from residents and voting to either recommend or deny a permit. The final decision, with consideration of the community board’s vote, is made by the State Liquor Authority. “We need to draft a letter. And need to feel out other community boards,” Board 4 District Manager by Noah Zuss Corona and Elmhurst are flooded with alcohol-related quality-of-life prolems—and a host of new liquor license applications—a civic activist railed during the Queens Community Board 4 meeting last Tuesday, May 13, at Corona’s Flanders Field VFW Post 150. Following Public Safety Committee chairperson Lucy Schilero’s report, the board voted to draft a letter that will be sent to other Queens’ community boards asking if residents in those communities have been dealing with similar problems related to excessive drinking. To Meet Demand by Robert Pozarycki Packed by popular demand, the L and M lines will get a significant service boost from the MTA later this year. The authority announced last Wednesday, May 14, it would add dozens of round-trip trains to the L line on weekends and three additional round-trip trains on weeknights in the fall. This will supplement the additional eight weekend and eight weeknight round-trip trains coming to the L line next month. Also this fall, the MTA will introduce an extra Forest Hills-bound M train to weekday morning rush hours and an additional Middle Village-bound M train for the lateafternoon rush. Next month, the M train will get a weekend service boost of its own, as the MTA will extend weekend shuttle service to Essex Street in Manhattan. Increased ridership on the L and M lines—which run through the ever-growing neighborhoods of Bushwick, Ridgewood and Williamsburg—and an analysis of schedules led the MTA to enhance service on both lines. Boosting weekend service on the L in particular, according to MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco, “will decrease wait times for customers as well as increase capacity on a line that continues to see ridership growth, most notably during off-peak hours.” “Ridership is at an all-time high, including records for weekend ridership,” he added. “These are customers who rely on us for all of their transportation needs, both work and play, and we are trying to meet that demand with our available resources.” In all, 33 additional round-trip L trains will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 23 additional round-trip L trains will operate during the same time period on -SEE TRAINS ON PG. 55- Cops Catch Brooklyn Man Smashing Into R’wood Car Say Suspect Has Lengthy Record by Robert Pozarycki A Brooklyn man with a long rap sheet was arrested early last Thursday morning, May 15, after police caught him as he broke into a parked vehicle in Ridgewood, authorities reported.
