In light of recent reports about employee and customer safety, do you still plan on visiting your local nail salon? “I think I would say yes, if they can change the practices, but I’m still going to get my nails done.” Diana Ramanujam BY ANGELA MATUA “Yes, I will.” Giovanna “If something is going to be done about it, it’s something as a girl you always have to do. You don’t want anyone to be in danger though. Nobody should be in danger from working.” Lianne Gancarz “Maybe not. I usually do them at my house.” Maria Pijuan “Unfortunately, yes.” Rachel Ericksen “I will and I promise the tip will go to the worker and not to the owner of the salon. Something has to be done.” Wendy August street talk “As of now yes, because I like to get my nails done, unless they fi nd some kind of organic place or something. Until then I will go.” Maggie Kasimis “Yes, same.” Stephanie Guevara “I don’t go anyway. I don’t like going to those places.” Rabia Masood  SNAPS QUEENS Fixing the broken shelter system The city fi nally came to its senses on May 11 regarding its treatment of the homeless. First, Mayor Bill de Blasio came to Corona to announce a new interagency program designed to address fl agrant, hazardous violations in the city’s homeless shelters. This comes on the heels of a Department of Investigation report that revealed some sheltered residents were subjected to squalid conditions, from rodent infestation to building disrepair and even broken or missing smoke detectors. City Comptroller Scott Stringer took things a step further mere hours after de Blasio’s announcement, when he revealed his refusal to sign a Department of Homeless Services contract to make permanent the temporary homeless shelter at the former Pan American Hotel in Elmhurst. Stringer said he would not sign off on the deal unless and until quality-of-life improvements are made at the hotel. It’s about time the city fi nally did something to correct the problems that media outlets, homeless advocates and others have been screaming about for more than a year. The conditions in many of these shelters have been nothing short of abominable, and it refl ected poorly on our city’s responsibility to the destitute. Finally, the city is cleaning up its act, but other shelters are planned across the city. These plans should be put on ice until the existing shelters are brought up to code and the responsible parties demonstrate a willingness to treat shelter residents as people, not prisoners guilty of poverty. Let NY be done with crooked pols At last showing some true leadership, state Senator Dean Skelos — the latest New York State lawmaker indicted for corruption — quietly resigned his leadership post on May 11. The Republican majority moved quickly to replace Skelos with a fellow senator from Long Island, John Flanagan. The last fi ve — FIVE! — state Senate leaders wound up in handcuffs for corruption, either while in offi ce or just after departing Albany. We hope Flanagan doesn’t follow in the footsteps of Joe Bruno, Malcolm Smith, Pedro Espada, John Sampson and now Skelos — because those footsteps ultimately led to a courtroom. Because of this seemingly infi nite pattern of treachery in Albany, it’s not enough for Skelos to merely vacate a leadership post. He needs to get out of government altogether, along with the other charlatans who either revel in corruption or tolerate it by their ignorance of any real and meaningful reform. No corrupt offi cial should wait for the cops to come to their home with a subpoena, or for voters to boot them out, or for old age to set in during their incumbency, to leave offi ce. They should get out now while they still can. As Oliver Cromwell said, “Depart, we say, and let us have done with you.
