TIMES, THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2014 • 38 SAFE Recycling Is Coming To Queens Kick Off Spring With NYC Dept. of Sanitation Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia announced that the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will hold its annual SAFE Disposal Event in Queens on Saturday, Apr. 26, to provide NYC residents with a one-stop method to safely dispose of potentially harmful household products. NYC residents should bring products such as pesticides, strong cleaners, mercury-containing devices, paints, oils, electronics, and medications to this year’s SAFE Disposal Events. Only NYC residential waste will be accepted. To identify harmful products, look for the following signal words: DANGER, WARNING, POISON, or CAUTION. Products labeled DANGER represent the highest hazard level. Please also bring any other materials stored in your home that you know may be harmful. “We provide NYC residents with an easy way to safely dispose of potentially harmful products that often end up stored in their closets, cabinets, storage areas, basements, and garages,” said Commissioner Garcia. “We are excited to once again hold these events after last year’s -SEE SAFE ON PG. 66- Lawmaker Introduces 1st City Carpet Recycling Bill Mandates Proper Disposal By Developers City Council Member Peter Koo has introduced legislation that would require carpets in commercial establishments to be recycled if they are being removed as part of a construction, alteration or demolition project. Currently, there are no laws governing the recycling of carpets in the City of New York. If this bill is enacted, beginning on Jan. 1, 2015, no person would be allowed to dispose of carpeting removed from a commercial unit or building as solid waste. Any construction, alteration or demolition project within the city, where there is carpeting covering a floor space equal to 10,000 or more square feet, would trigger this mandate.
