The Lady Red Hawks were accepting donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund during the game and raised almost $900, coach Anthony Alfaro said. “I always tell my Lady Red Hawks, when you have been blessed with good fortune in your life, you need to give back in some sort of way,” Alfaro said. “This is a cause that I believe in and it is linked with the sport I love—women's basketball. The athletes were honored at the CUNY Awards Luncheon at the Water Club in New York City last Thursday, Feb. 19. Freshman Kailyn Richburg and sophomore Kristen Deer have had amazing seasons so far this year. Richburg won the award for being ranked 9th overall in the nation in steals and 10th in the nation in assists. Deer is 4th in the nation in offensive rebounding and 10th in total rebounds overall. Lady Red Hawks’ coach Anthony Alfaro is extremely proud of his two players. “Kailyn Richburg has battled injuries all season long. She has been a leader through it all,” Alfaro said of the freshman guard. “As one of the remaining five roster players, she has endured the trials and tribulations that comes with the responsibility of playing the entire 40 minutes of the game.” “Kristen Deer is a hard working warrior. She is a force to be reckoned with on the boards,” Alfaro touted. “There has not been an opponent all season that has been able to contain her defensively. The LaGuardia Community College Lady Red Hawks sporting their pink “Shoot Down Cancer” shirts to support the Play 4Kay Fund during their charity game against Valley Forge Military Academy on Friday, Feb. 13. blowing a 14-point second half lead, the Lady Red Hawks were down three in the final minute. Jasmin Wint hit a runner with 2.7 seconds left in regulation and was fouled. She sank the foul shot to send the exciting matchup into overtime. The Lady Red Hawks ended up losing the charity event 60-51 in overtime. Kailyn Richburg scored 22 points and freshman Sarah Edwards was dominant on the boards, grabbing 18 rebounds in the loosing effort. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was founded by North Carolina State University women’s basketball head coach Kay Yow, who died in 2009 from breast cancer. With the creation of the fund, Coach Yow hoped to raise money to further research conducted by the nation’s top doctors and medical experts so more cancer patients could have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials.
