Court Meeting Focuses On Veterans’ Treatment City Council Member Eric A. Ulrich (at right) with Queens County Supreme Court Justice Marcia Hirsch. by Anthony Giudice Assisting veterans across Queens was the focus of a meeting between City Council Member Eric A. Ulrich and Queens County Supreme Court Justice Marcia Hirsch last Wednesday, Feb. 4. The lawmaker and judge focused on the Queens Veterans Treatment Program, which was formed in 2010, assists veterans in accessing treatment and support services tailored to meet their specific needs. Participants are also paired with a court appointed mentor. Those who complete the program may have their charges dropped, reduced or receive a reduction in their sentence. Ulrich, who chairs the City Council Veterans Committee, plans to examine the success of these Veterans Treatment Courts and ways to ensure all veterans have access to them. “These specialized courts reduce recidivism and connect veterans to valuable services that assists with substance abuse and mental health issues,” Ulrich said. “Judge Hirsch runs an impressive operation in Queens that affords local vets the second chance they deserve.” Pol Kept Press Out Of So. Ozone Park Meeting by Anthony Giudice Reporters were barred from covering a South Ozone Park town hall meeting last Tuesday, Feb. 3, regarding a juvenile detention center. City Council Member Ruben Wills (at right), who co-organized the event, announced that no press was allowed during the town hall meeting, established to bolster aid in the community’s efforts to close and relocate a juvenile detention center that will be located at 133-23 127th St. The meeting did not proceed until all members of the press were removed from St. Anthony of Padua Church. Anthony Gellineau, South Ozone Park Civic Association West president, told the Times Newsweekly in a phone interview on Monday that the civic association “didn’t know anything about the press ban until the lawyers said no media.” Wills, his staff and the lawyer present told the press that important legal strategies were to be addressed at the meeting and they did not want any of that information in the media, fearing it may hinder the community’s efforts in closing the juvenile detention center in its neighborhood. Wills was arrested earlier last Tuesday, in his second arrest in less than a year. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wills filed false documents and failed to disclose certain financial information in official forms filed with the city’s conflicts of interest board. Wills pleaded not guilty on five felony counts in a Manhattan criminal court. Wills already faces charges of fraud and grand larceny for a separate arrest.
