St. Mary’s
ily, Norman Feinberg, the
Petrocelli family and the
Kids for Kids Foundation
for their work making this
extraordinary project into
a reality.”
The capital project
transformed 22,300 square
feet of administrative
space into a state-of-theart
facility. The 27 ventilator
equipped beds will
be in multiple two-bedded
patient rooms, which provide
comfortable space for
children’s accessibility,
equipment needs, family
visits and privacy.
According to the Medicaid
Redesign Workgroup
on Medically Fragile Children,
nearly 100 of New
York’s children who require
ventilator-equipped
beds are forced to seek
care out of state due to
high demand. St. Mary’s
— the only pediatric postacute
care facility in New
York City — was already
operating at 100 percent
capacity. The expansion
will allow the hospital to
meet the growing need for
pediatric respiratory care.
The renovation has included
a new Great Room,
a communal space for recreation,
education, visitation
and dining. The transformation
will provide
home-like amenities that
put patients into a totalhealing
environment.
“In times of struggle,
the proper support and facilities
are crucial to help
sick children and their
families. That’s why we
were so thrilled to support
the new expansion
at St. Mary’s Healthcare
System for Children,” said
Robert Catalano, founder
and board chair of the
Kids for Kids Foundation.
“We look forward to continuing
our work with St.
Mary’s to provide care and
support for any child who
needs it.”

The stretch of Rockaway Beach from Beach 92nd Street to Beach 102nd Street should be open
in time for the summer swim season. File photo
Beach
in time for the summer season
depends on when the
dredging work commences
and the severity of spring
storms along the coastline.
Katz is hoping the beach
will be ready for the summer
swim season which
traditionally begins on Memorial
Day weekend.
“Rockaway Beach is a
major attraction in the city
of New York. It drives the
economy of the peninsula
and its resiliency is crucial
to the residents, businesses
and visitors,” Katz said.
“It is important that it be
fully restored in time for
this summer.”
The announcement was
made Monday after Schumer
made a successful push
for $7 million in federal
funding for the dredging
project. But the installation
of jetties and other
measures that would keep
the sand in place was not
included in this plan.
“While this is great
news for the upcoming
beach season, I will continue
urging the Army Corps
to hurry up with their
broader erosion and storm
protection measures like
groins, jetties and dunes,
which will protect beachgoers,
businesses, schools
and homeowners alike
in Rockaway and Jamaica
Bay for generations,”
Schumer said.
