Employers: Laws are changing - Review the latest HR requirements today
Mandatory Employee Blood Donation Leave
What you need to know about New York State’s new requirement.
New York State just passed legislation requiring businesses with 20 or more employees to provide time for their staff to donate
blood at an off-site location. The leave covers three work hours per calendar year and the law requires employers to notify their
employees of the available leave in writing.
Your options include:
• Writing it in an employee handbook
• Posting a flyer in a common area
• Sending out a company-wide email
Employees must be notified of the available leave upon hire and before January 15 of each year.
Last Chance to Renew your Employee Benefits Program
Time is running out to renew your employee benefits for January 1. February and March renewals should start the process as soon
as possible. Delaying can be harmful to your negotiations, limit your benefit package choices and be incredibly costly. For small
groups, waiting until the last minute to ask for renewal information, quotes, policy options, enrollment materials or ID cards can
be overwhelming and expensive.
Here’s what you need to do:
• To secure the best renewal contract, review options as soon as possible. Waiting can prove disastrous.
• Contact your benefits consultant to start compiling the choices available to you.
• Gather the necessary data to move forward. Create an employee status, current carrier invoice, and benefits summary.
Did you know 3 out of 5 companies are sued by former employees every year?!
The fastest growing workplace discrimination claim categories are retaliation, sexual harassment and disability law violation. A
staggering 40% of these lawsuits are against small companies (15-100 employees). Informed hiring, an available employee
handbook, thorough job descriptions, clear harassment policies and effective training are just a few precautions you can take to
mitigate your risks, but there is so much more you should do.
In the long run, taking the time to follow the right steps is money well spent – and saved!
How much does a discrimination lawsuit cost?
• Two years to go to trial
• A 56% chance of the plaintiff winning
• Verdicts exceeding $250k
