 Helping ‘Each Life Find Meaning’
Since 1956 AABR has been dedicated to providing support for
more than 1,000 individuals throughout the New York
 metropolitan region.
“The organization was founded to support individuals coming
out of the Willowbrook State School have more robust lives,”
 said Libby Traynor, LCSW, CEO.
Headquartered in College Point, AABR’s “person-centered
focus” offers an adult day program, residential program,
Saturday respite/recreation, the acclaimed New York Child
Learning Institute (NYCLI), a pioneering school for children
with autism, and even a “Pathways to Employment” program.
AABR’s school, NYCLI, serves ages 3 to 21.
The organization’s programs serve individuals with
intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly those
in group homes, throughout their entire lives, which means
Traynor and her staff are finding ways to fund the retrofitting
of their homes and programs to meet those needs.
With 23 residences in the Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan and
Staten Island, each of AABR’s homes “is distinctive to the
character of the people living there.
“We are helping them live their best life in their own home,”
 continued Traynor.
Part of that, she said, is also incorporating family members,
other service providers and AABR staff in “playing meaningful
roles in the lives of individuals.”
“We empower our staff to empower the individuals,” said
 Traynor.
These individuals served by AABR have life plans created
based on their specific needs, including medical, social,
 psychological and more.
“Our core belief is in the true value of human life,” said
Traynor, who noted that, “as a leader I stand on the shoulders
of the staff to help and empower them, for when you share
 that power it becomes infinite.”
