FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com AUGUST 27, 2015 • KIDS & EDUCATION • THE QUEENS COURIER 43 Activities to Encourage Speech & Language Development With Children Birth-Three By Betty Abo , MA, CCC-SLP, TSHH Parents can encourage a child’s speech and language development in many ways. Language is best learned while doing something; expose your child to new experiences and talk about them before, during and a er the event. Speak to your child in short, clear, consistent sentences, using repetition. Talk about what you are doing, thinking and planning. Talk about the here and now. Remember you are a language model for your child! At rst he will imitate words; later he will speak words on his own. Praise all of the child’s e orts to communicate. Below is a list of ten recommended activities: 1. Read to your child (identify, label and describe the pictures). 2. Speak to your child using simple vocabulary to comment on everyday activities. 3. Set up environments that encourage the child to want to speak. 4. Prepare and cook food (label objects and have child actively involved in the preparation). 5. Sing songs with actions. 6. Go to the park and comment on child’s activities. 7. O er your child a choice of two toys; follow the child’s lead and play together with the toy he chooses. 8. Play should be open-ended as one can use toys in a variety of ways to prompt language. 9. Use a dollhouse with furniture or another playset (farm/pirate ship/ garage) with manipulatives. 10. Pretend with your child while identifying and labeling vocabulary and actions, as well as following commands and answering simple questions. 11. Use blocks/puzzles/play dough hold pieces and help put them together to complete or build something. 12. Play turn-taking activities roll a ball to each other, take turns blowing bubbles, or play games such as “Simon Says……touch your noise” for following directions. Make speaking and listening experiences enjoyable for your child and at the same time, language-learning opportunities!
