The skilled staff in the Career Services department at Five Towns College aims to give students the resources they need to find employment in their desired field. “Internships expose students to the professional environment,” says Krysti O’Rourke, Director of Career Services. “Not only do they learn how people communicate and work with their colleagues BUSINESS in the NEWS and clients, they can see how the employees conduct themselves at the job.” O’Rourke notes that in addition to learning about the actual company they are working for, internships are crucial for developing relationships that will help Five Towns students find opportunities after they graduate. “Our staff here truly cares about the students’ development,” explains O’Rourke. “I believe that Five Towns’ relationships with employers, and our ability to meet with students individually, sets us apart. We are able to know a student’s strengths and weaknesses, and how they may fit in with a particular company.” In addition to the personal attention that each Five Towns College student receives, the Career Services staff works closely with department heads and faculty members at the school in order to ensure the best possible placements for students, based on their talents and experience. Overall, O’Rourke says that the best tip she can offer students seeking an internship is to do extensive research. “Students need to investigate and explore opportunities online so that they can be exposed to all that is offered.” she says. “Also, make sure your resume is reviewed by a professional.” Five Towns College 305 North Service Road Dix Hills, New York 11746 631-424-7000 www.ftc.edu Krysti O’Rourke THE COURIER/Photos by Mike DiBartolomeo William Choi, along with Congressmember Grace Meng; State Senator Tony Avella; Assemblymember Ed Braunstein; and other invited VIP›s cut the ribbon at the new Bayside Hmart.
