FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com july 30, 2015 • The Queens Courier 39 NEW LEADERSHIP AT THE DOUGLASTON AND LITTLE NECK HISTORICAL SOCIETY After an exhaustive search by the Executive Board, the Douglaston and Little Neck Historical Society (DLNHS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan A. Mathisen as its firstever Executive Director. Ms. Mathisen officially began her duties on June 10; her position was made possible by the many generous donations to the Society and the proceeds from the “La Dolce Vita” Gala to commemorate the DLNHS’ Silver Anniversary in 2014. The DLNHS has fulfilled many of its goals since its establishment in 1989. Among its successes are achieving Historic District designation for both Douglas Manor and Douglaston Hill, aiding in the creation of a Strategic Action Plan for the revitalization of Douglaston Village, and the replacement of Douglaston’s iconic Weeping Beech tree. At this juncture, the Board of Directors determined that it would be beneficial for the organization and the community to have a professional Executive Director to guide the volunteer Executive Committee in its future efforts. “It is with great confidence that we welcome Ms. Mathisen. We have no doubt that she will lead the Douglaston and Little Neck Historical Society to the greater benefit of the organization and of the community. We are grateful to our donors who have made her appointment possible,” said Historical Society President Bob Coddington, “I am thrilled to be part of the DLNHS,” Ms. Mathisen responded, “ and I look forward to helping it grow into a vibrant historic and preservation resource for Douglaston and Little Neck, as well as the broader Queens community.” Her plans include expanding the DLNHS, with dynamic educational programs, an active membership program, improved outreach to the community, and a stronger organizational infrastructure. Susan Mathisen has an extensive non-profit career, having worked as a museum and academic administrator, art conservator, and development officer. Her past positions include those at the Morgan Library, The Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, the Conservation Center at New York University, the American Academy in Rome and Villa La Pietra, Florence, Italy. In addition to her role at DLNHS, she will continue as President of SAM Fundraising Solutions, her consultancy specializing in fundraising for historic preservation and art conservation. Ms. Mathisen has also served on a variety of boards and committees and is currently Vice President of the Historic Districts Council, New York City’s major advocacy group for historic neighborhoods.
