College Bound Club in Cambria Heights
Members of the College Bound Club at the Humanities and Arts High School
in Cambria Heights celebrated the end of the school year at the Campus Magnet
Educational Campus. Founded by students Nyiesha Francis and Niama Chambers,
the club helps high school seniors get through the college application process.

MVB Unveils New Lab and Honors Alumni
A new biotechnology laboratory came
to the Martin Van Buren High School
in Queens Village last month. Students,
faculty and guests held a ceremony to
commemorate the new lab and honor
some distinguished alumni.
Th e new laboratory was quickly broken
in by students, who performed experiments
inside it as part of the ceremony.
As part of the celebration, Dr. M.
Natalie Achong and Marc Casper, two
alumni, were inducted into the high
school’s hall of fame. Achong is the
chair of one of Connecticut’s largest
community health centers, an attending
physician at St. Vincent’s Hospital
and an assistant clinical professor at Yale
University. Casper is the CEO of Th ermo
Fisher Scientifi c Inc., a biotechnology
product development company.
Both Achong and Casper received a
plaque in the halls of the high school,
honoring their achievements in the science
world.
Senior class celebrates
Congratulations to the 2019 graduating
class at the Humanities and Arts Magnet
High School in Cambria Heights. Faculty
members Ms. Tonge, Ms. Aris, Ms. Reese,
Ms. Leacock and Mr. Ayetiwa supported
the students all year. Th e Humanities
and Arts Magnet High School is a small
but vibrant school, sharing a campus with
three other magnet high schools.

International Festival held at
Martin Van Buren High School
A festival honoring art and culture from around the world was held at Martin Van Buren
High School in Queens Village in April. Eighteen diff erent performances showcased song
and dance from diff erent countries. Th e school’s drumline, band and dance club were all
