Join the Urban Park Rangers for their Intermediate Canoeing workshop at Bayswater Park. For ages eight and up, participants will meet at Bay 35 Street and Beach Channel Drive. From 11 a.m. -1 p.m. and from 3-5 p.m., the Big Apple Circus will be dazzling audiences with their array of oldfashioned circus-acts. MONDAY, JUNE 17 First day of the USTA Junior Tennis Summer Camp. Activities include quality instruction so players may improve their game, multi-sport activities such as soccer and baseball, optional fi eld trips and off-court fun. From 5 p.m. to dusk, Socrates Sculpture Park will be hosting the 2013 Summer Solstice Celebration at 32-01 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City. Get creative with solstice-themed art-making workshops presented in part by the Noguchi Museum and the Queens Museum of Art. There will also be face-painting, provided by Agostino Arts, as well as a special solstice ritual performed by Urban Shaman Mama Donna. Also featured will be a “silent disco” presented by Silent Storm Sounds Systems, a unique experience in which guests wear wireless headphones, entering into a dance party like no other while the surrounding atmosphere remains completely quiet. SUNDAY, JUNE 23 Starting at 1p.m., join the Urban Rangers will be teaching the ancient art of archery. The workshop will instruct participants on the safe and proper way to use a bow and arrow. For adults, teens, and children over eight years old. All equipment is provided and personal equipment is not allowed. The event will take place at the Forest Park Visitor’s Center on Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive. The Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College presents its Guerilla Arts Ensemble. Featuring talented jazz and EDITOR’S PICK classical musician from the faculty and student body of Queens College, you never know who you may discover at one of these ‘Guerilla Concerts.” Starting at 2 p.m. at Flushing Town Hall, call 718- 463-7700 during the week prior for the names of performing artists. MONDAY, JUNE 24 Come enjoy The Art of Flamenco: a Dance and History Workshop for the Entire Family at 6 p.m. at the Flushing Library. The workshop will not only teach you some basic fl amenco dance steps but the rich culture and history of the dance as well. TUESDAY, JUNE 25 Astoria Park is hosting its annual waterfront Independence FREE JAZZ CLINIC WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, From 5 – 7 p.m. on the fi rst Wednesday of each month, Flushing Town Hall is offering a free jazz clinic for high school students. Interested beginners or experienced musicians are encouraged to come and learn from Queens College’s professor Michael Mossman. Along with the monthly workshops, resources provided include drum kits, bass amps, music stands and keyboards. Participants also receive free MetroCards and free admission to professional jazz jams to observe. The Queens Symphony Orchestra will perform, followed by a spectacular display of pyrotechnics by world-renowned company Grucci Fireworks. THURSDAY, JUNE 27 Curated by Long Island City Artists (LICA), the exhibition “Bridging the Gap” is a celebration of the diversity and creativity present in the many communities of Queens. The exhibition was assembled through an open call to the artists of Queens and is open from 12 to 5 p.m. from June 27th until July 14th at the Flushing Town Hall, located at 137-35 Northern Blvd. There is a suggested admission fee of $5 and admission is free for students, members, and LICA. affi liates.
