An acquaintance wanted to get into the field and opened Hernandez’s eyes to an exciting future. “I enjoy that it’s a job that changes every day,” she said. “You walk in and you’re not sure what you’re going to be doing, and by the end of the day, you’re an expert.” Hernandez was born in Gravesend, Brooklyn and spent the first half of her life in the borough. After graduating college, Hernandez landed the production assistant position at CBS and later created a tape of her reporting work and got a job at NY1 in 1998. She stayed there until 2001. She later moved to Sunnyside in 2001 and joined ABC NEWS 1, a local affiliate, but moved on to Los Angeles. She worked as a correspondent there from 2002 to 2005. After making her way back to Queens, Hernandez worked as an overnight anchor for “ABC World News Now” from 2006 to 2008 when she decided to take a break to have her second child. “It was scary when I made the decision not to work for a while, but I really felt that at that point it was a priority,” she said. After about a year-and-a-half on leave, the mother of two and 2011’s Queens Courier “Woman of the Year” started freelancing for FOX 5 where she later landed a staff position. Hernandez said she is very about her return to ABC. “I am really lucky that the folks at FOX 5 gave me that opportunity, and that opportunity turned into something bigger and greater,” she said. Of her Sunnyside neighborhood, Hernandez said she is loving it. “I’m happy to live in a very normal and down-to-earth place and I feel like we’re living in small town USA, but just 15 minutes from Midtown,” she said.
