Adams broadens mayoral
appeal with Suozzi endorsement

Brooklyn Borough President
and Mayoral Candidate Eric
Adams today put to rest Mayor
Bill de Blasio’s oft en-used “tale of
two cities” campaign slogan and
rhetoric.
Both Adams and U.S. Rep. Tom
Suozzi (D-Queens, Long Island)
hammered home the theme of
one city working together at a
press event in front of the Tony
Beechurst Deli in Whitestone. At
the event, both Suozzi and the
Italian American Political Action
Committee endorsements Adams
for mayor.
“We’re going to move forward,
but the only way we do that is by
unifying our city, not divided our
city. It’s not us against them. It’s not,
who’s going to one-up the other, it
is who’s going to come here together
to make sure that this is a city for
all New Yorkers. Make sure that it’s
aff ordable and is safe, and that as a
government we are held accountable,”
said Adams.
In introducing and endorsing
Adams, Suozzi also struck the one
city united theme in referencing
Adams’ working-class background
and his being a former New York
City Police Captain.
“He Adams understands and
respects and admires the police.
We hear this whole thing about
Black Lives Matter versus Blue
Lives Matter. You know what? It’s
both. It’s not one of the two. You
can respect and admire the police
department as Eric did as a former
police offi cer, but you also
could look for reform to make
sure it looks out for people’s interest
to make sure that it treats people
fairly. You can do both of those
things,” said Suozzi.
Suozzi also pointed out that
Adams, a Bayside High School
graduate, also would come to the
mayor job with years of government
experience as both a state
senator and borough president.
“Adams understands how government
sometimes doesn’t work
as well as it should, or we need to
get all the diff erent pieces of government
all the diff erent silos to
work together to work as one to
help little kids who are trying to
get through school, to help families
to help people to fi nd jobs to
help small businesses work, and
to bring businesses, big businesses,
back to New York,” said Suozzi.
The Suozzi and Italian-
American PAC endorsement also
gave Adams a chance to expound
on his small business recovery
plan.
Yang calls for green energy plant
on Long Island City waterfront
BY BILL PARRY

Mayoral frontrunner Andrew
Yang made a campaign stop
along the East River in Long
Island City calling for the development
and construction of the
proposed River Green Power
(RGP) plant this week.
Yang was joined by Bishop
Mitchell Taylor, the senior pastor
of Center of Hope International
and co-founder of Urban
Upbound, to highlight how the
project could be a model for district
energy plants to provide
green heating and cooling services
for neighboring buildings.
The plant would drastically
reduce reliance of fossil
fuels while helping buildings
exceed the requirements of the
recently enacted Local Law 97.
Developer Bruce Teitelbaum
has plans to build the green
energy hub on his property just
north of Anable Basin known
locally as “Lake Vernon.” In
addition to construction of a
geothermal heating and cooling
plant, the RGP proposal
calls for bringing in private
capital to upgrade the heating
and cooling systems at the
Queensbridge Houses NYCHA
development nearby.
“Our city lost
700,000 jobs during
the pandemic and the truth is
that right now our recovery is
behind much of the rest of the
country,” Yang said. “As mayor,
I’m going to be laser-focused on
creating jobs and getting New
Yorkers back to work. Beyond
the extraordinary challenge we
have ahead of us to rebuild our
city’s economy, we also have to
think about how we can create
jobs that also fi ght the threat of
climate change. And I believe
we can do both right here in
communities like Long Island
City.”
Th e six-acre site is next to
the parcels of land that were
part of Amazon’s HQ2 campus
proposal and were later part of
the ill-fated YourLIC development
plan.
“Th e proposed River Green
Power plant is exactly the kind
of innovative, job-creating
green infrastructure projects
we should by backing not just
to get our city back on its feet,
but back on its feet and sprinting
towards the future,” Yang
said. “Th is project alone will
create 1,000 of those jobs and a
sustainable source of energy for
years to come.”
The RGP proposal was
endorsed by Queensbridge
Houses Tenants Association
President April Simpson,
“Th is plant will do right by
our tenants by providing reliable
and sustainable energy to
the Queensbridge Houses at no
cost to the residents,” Simpson
said. “Th e plan would be a
godsend to the 75 percent
of families in
our development
who
c u r r e n t -
ly do not
have reliable
air conditioning.
I am grateful
that Andrew Yang
has made greening
NYCHA facilities core
to his mayoral campaign.
We all deserve
to play a role in the
green energy revolution.”
