ST. FRANCIS PREP STUDENTS EARN MANY AND VARIED HONORS
Students from the St. Francis Prep Art Department
are, once again, winners in the National Scholastic Arts
& Writing Awards. Students from across the nation
submitted 255,000 works of art and writing. Winners
are recognized at the regional level and celebrated in
exhibitions and ceremonies at The New School and The
Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Winning a Gold Key Award from Scholastic Arts &
Writing is a massive achievement, not only for the fact that
from all the New York City teens who entered, their work
was recognized as some of the strongest, but their work will
be exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Presented
by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic
Awards are the longest-running and most prestigious
recognition program for creative teens in the United States.
Located in the Ruth & Harold D. Uris Center for Education,
their art work, along with more than 600 works of art and
writing, will be exhibited from March 23rd to May 28th.
Many other students from the Art Department also entered
the competition, ranging from Sophomores to Seniors, and
received Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions. The Art
Department is extremely proud of all those who entered
and their accomplishments!

In other areas, Prep’s English Department is proud
to announce the winners of our 10th annual Poetry
Out Loud recitation competition. Junior Amy Mwai
and sophomore Aaila Awan were our two winners, and
junior Sanaia Layne was our runner-up. Both Amy and
Aaila represented Prep at the New York City Regionals
on February 8th at F.I.T.’s Katie Murphy Amphitheatre,
with Amy being the runner-up! She will compete in
the New York State Competition in Syracuse on March
9th. For nine out of the last ten years, St. Francis Prep
has been the only Catholic high school in New York City
to compete in this prestigious national competition. We
are also proud to have had three New York City Regional
winners and two New York State Runners-Up.

Finally, congratulations to Senior John S. Sullivan
who has advanced as a Finalist in the National Merit
Scholarship Program. Every year, over three million
students take the PSAT, of which, 16,000 are named Semi-
Finalists, and half are named Finalists, a very prestigious
honor. Congratulations to John for demonstrating
distinguished performance.
