Brooklyn’s holiday markets pivot
to virtual, reimagined showcases
BY JESSICA PARKS
The city’s annual holiday markets
are looking a bit different this year as
the borough braces itself for a potential
second wave of COVID-19 cases,
with some retailers shifting to entirely
remote operations, while others are
utilizing outdoor space to offer a “shop
local” experience — right when Brooklyn’s
small businesses need it most.
Shop local, eat local
Downtown Brooklyn’s City Point will
be showcasing locally-made goods in
partnership with The Maker Show, a new
organization focused on empowering local
creators. Shoppers can snag gifts for
the whole family — including their furry
friends — with dozens of vendors offering
accessories, clothing, treats, and art.
As an added bonus, patrons can take
a break from shopping and stop by the
nearby Dekalb Market Hall’s expansive
range of global fare like Polish pierogies
or spicy Chinese cuisine.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard is bringing
its third annual holiday market
online this year with more than 20 of
its tenants offering their wares via
the internet. From high-quality spirits
to high fashion, all items available
for purchase are produced exclusively
by manufacturers and makers operating
in the Navy Yard — many of whom
have pivoted their businesses to massproduce
PPE during the pandemic.

Holiday extravaganza
Brooklyn Flea is taking over Dumbo’s
Washington Street for the holiday
season with a slew of activities — most
importantly a holiday market specializing
in vintage and handmade goods. In
partnership with the Dumbo Business
Improvement District, more than 40 vendors
will offer their goods each weekend
and many of the neighborhood’s shops
will expand to the outdoors. Stay warm
while walking through the open streets
with hot drinks and keep kids entertained
with fun and games.
