Park Slope medical center announces new
chief surgeon of breast cancer oncology
 BY ELISSA ESHER
 NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn
 Methodist Hospital rang in
 Breast Cancer Awareness Month
by recruiting Dr. Vivian Bea as Section
 Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology
on September 16th. A Park Slope
local and true “super-mom,” Bea also
serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery
 at Weill Cornell Medicine, completed
 her fellowship at The University
of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center,
 published best-selling children’s book
 “Chocolate Kid Chronicals: Please
Don’t Touch My Magical Hair” in 2018,
and has been recognized as a top physician
in her fi eld, all while mothering
 two boys.
 “It’s a great opportunity,” said
Bea. “I’ve been blessed with a job
that doesn’t feel like a job — caring
for people affected by breast diseases
 and helping them reach healing
 — the light at the end of the tunnel.”
 Disturbed by the comparatively
low survival rates of African American
 women with breast cancer, Bea
said she has dedicated her life not
only to fighting this disease, but
 also to fighting the “disparities
that come with it.” At 35, Bea was
selected as one of the 40 Under 40
Leaders in Minority Health by the
 National Minority Quality Forum
 in 2018 for her dedication
 to community outreach
 and breast cancer disparities
 research. She says she
 will strive toward the elimination
 of breast cancer disparities
 in King’s County during
 her time in Brooklyn.
 “Unfortunately, Brooklyn
 statistically harbors the
 greatest racial disparities in
the medical fi eld off all fi ve boroughs,
   particularly in breast cancer,”
said Bea. “My colleagues and I
really want to focus more on hospital
 outreach, especially during Breast
 Cancer Awareness Month. The disparities
 we see in Brooklyn really
boil down to awareness — you won’t
go get a mammogram if you don’t
know the benefi ts of being proactive
 — so we want to target communities
who haven’t been as educated about
 breast cancer.”
Based in Park Slope, New York-
 Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist
 Dr. Vivian Bea
                       NewYork-Presbyterian Public Affairs
 Hospital has provided healthcare services
to the people of Brooklyn since
1887. The hospital is recognized as a
 Breast Diagnositc Center of Excellence
 and provides a myriad
 of services for breast cancer
 patients, including breast conservation
 therapy, radiation
 therapy, workshops, and support
 groups. Bea said it was
 this multi-disciplinary
 center that drew her most
 when she left her former
 position as Breast Surgical
 Oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer
Center at Cooper in Camden, NJ for
 New York-Presbyterian.
 “Most people who are diagnosed
with cancer have to see experts in
multiple fields in many different locations,”
  said Bea. “With our multidisciplinary
 clinic, patients can see
all their specialists in one day. The
future of breast cancer is exciting
 because we’re never satisfied with
where we are right now. We’re always
 looking for new methods like
this one to improve patient satisfaction.”

Smiles for a lifetime thanks to Dr. Lichter
There was a time not that long ago
when it was assumed that missing,
broken and yellow teeth were just an
unfortunate part of growing old. Brooklyn
 dentist Joseph Lichter, DDS, insists
it no longer has to be that way.
“My motto,” says Dr. Lichter, “is
smiles for a lifetime.” By helping
 patients make informed decisions
about their oral health needs and
offering the latest in cosmetic dentistry,
  Dr. Lichter is committed to
maintain or, if necessary, restore a
 beautiful smile.
 “Sadly,” says Dr. Lichter, “dental
problems can have a real impact on
quality of life. Many people hold back
from laughing or smiling because they
 are uncomfortable about their appearance.”
At the office patients will find three
 dentists, skilled hygienists and the
latest equipment to meet all of their
 dental needs. But more importantly,
said Dr. Lichter, he and his staff offer
the care that their patients deserve.
 “Unfortunately in today’s world
some of the care part has been lost.
 Skill and compassion go hand-in-hand
 when providing exceptional patient
 care.”
 Whether they are performing
 traditional dental procedures or
 cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Lichter’s team
 takes an overall comprehensive
 approach that takes into consideration
the patient’s entire body, not just the
 teeth.
Dr. Lichter said he is proud to bring
 stateof-the art dentistry to Midwood.
“I am always trying to be on the
cutting edge of my profession,” he said.
He appreciates the positive feedback he
has been getting. The new office space
that has been tripled in size allows the
 team to accommodate more patients
 more quickly.
This is a full service traditional
dental practice that has been in
Midwood for more than 65 years. Dr.
Lichter is the third dentist to run the
office. Of course Dr. Lichter performs
 traditional dental procedures such as
 teeth cleaning, fillings, root canal
therapy and the removal of teeth. But
in addition the practice offers the latest
 in restorative and cosmetic dentistry
 including implants, porcelain veneers
and crowns and fixed bridges. These
and similar procedures can make a
 broken smile look like new.
 The office offers Invisalign, an
alternative to metal braces that uses
 virtually invisible plastic aligners that
gently shift teeth into place over a
period of time. This alternative, the
 doctor said, has become increasingly
popular with teens and adults. This
procedure can have a longterm impact
 on quality of life.
The good news, Dr. Lichter said, is
that people are learning to take better
care of their teeth. And as people in
today’s world expect to live longer they
are more open to what cosmetic dentistry
 has to offer.
 He acknowledges that modern
 dentistry can be expensive, especially
for treatments that are not covered by
 insurance. “Dentists,” he explains,
 “can have extremely high overhead,
especially for work done outside the
office.” However Dr. Lichter said he
attempts to keep dentistry affordable so
 everyone can benefit.
His experience so far has been that
patients find the results well worth the
 investment.
