A group of do-gooders
took to the streets of
Brooklyn on Aug. 2 to
tie teal-colored ribbons
around trees in an effort
to raise awareness about
ovarian cancer.
Marking the start of
National Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month,
staff and volunteers
with the non-profi t Tell
Every Amazing Lady
About Ovarian Cancer
tied the ribbons, passed
out fl yers, hung posters
— which will help those
struggling with the disease
fi nd support, said
one survivor.
“It just brought me so
much happiness to know
that there was an organization
bringing awareness
to this,” said Brooklynite
Rosanna Logozzo,
who was diagnosed with
ovarian cancer at the
age of 25. “I didn’t have
any support at that time
because a lot of people
with ovarian cancer are
older people, so I felt like
I couldn’t relate to anybody.”
The organization
fl ooded Fifth Avenue in
Park Slope, Flatbush Avenue
in Prospect Heights,
and Myrtle Avenue in
Clinton Hill — bringing
with them their signature
color and their passionate
determination to
spread the word.
“I always try to encourage
other people I
know that are fi ghting
ovarian cancer to talk
to them,” said Logozzo.
“It’s just nice to know
that there is always support
out there, especially
when you feel all alone.”
The annual ribbon
tying event became
ever-more important
this year, as the organization’s
beloved TEAL
Walk was called off due
to the pandemic — although
they’ve reimagined
the event for the
age of coronavirus-mandated
social distancing,
having people walk and
run from anywhere, and
upload pictures to their
website.
In addition to the
now-virtual fundraising
walk, the organization
will light Brooklyn Borough
Hall with teal lights
each night between Sep.
7 and 12, further promoting
awareness of Ovarian
Cancer Awareness
Month.
