For two weekends only, you
can take the G to the sea!
The city’s only subway line
exclusive to the outer boroughs
will be extended fi ve miles to
take northern Brooklynites
to the beach for two weekends
in August — a “win” for seadreaming
straphangers, MTA
offi cials claim, in the midst of
service impacts.
“We plan carefully to
keep service disruptions to a
minimum,” said Demetrius
Crichlow, New York City Transit’s
acting senior vice president
for subways. “But there
are times when service changes
can actually result in localized
improvements for riders. When
that happens, we like to promote
it! In this case, we are extending
the G line by more than
5 miles and giving customers
from Greenpoint and Williamsburg
a direct route to Coney Island.”
COURIER L 10 IFE, JULY 30-AUG. 5, 2021
The G train will run to Coney
Island from Aug. 6 through
Aug. 9 and again from Aug. 13
through Aug. 16 — the same
time as scheduled service
changes along the A, C, F, and
E lines to accommodate Superstorm
Sandy-related tunnel repairs.
Crews will also work simultaneously
to install cables
around Downtown Brooklyn’s
Jay Street station to support
the ongoing signal modernization
work between Church Avenue
and Coney Island.
Over those weekends, the G
train will stop at all F stations
after Church Avenue in Kensington
— where the line typically
ends since its extension
from Smith–Ninth Streets in
Gowanus in 2009 — and will
mostly replace the F entirely between
Bergen Street in Boerum
Hill and Coney Island.
Instead, the F will be making
The G Train. File photo
stops at all C stations between
Euclid Avenue in East
New York and the 50th Street
Station in Manhattan.
Straphangers traveling
to Jay Street from within the
borough via the expanded G
line should transfer to the opposite
side of the platform at
Downtown Brooklyn’s Hoyt–
Schermerhorn station to a
Manhattan-bound A-train or
rerouted F train heading to
Manhattan for one stop. Passengers
heading to a Manhattan
F stations from Brooklyn
can transfer from a rerouted F
or A trains at Greenwich Village’s
W. Fourth Street station
and hop on the E line, which
will make those stops.
From 9:30 pm on Friday,
Aug.6 and Friday, Aug. 13
through 5 am the following
mornings, a free shuttle bus
will replace G train service between
the Bedford-Nostrand
Avenues station in Bedford-
Stuyvesant to Fourth Avenue-
Ninth Street in Park Slope
