36 North Shore Towers Courier n January 2017 The Migdal Chapter of Hadassah at North Shore Towers presents… Book club discussion of “The Nightingale” On Wednesday, January 25, the Migdal/ Hadassah Book Club will meet in the Coleridge Lounge at 2 p.m. Bern Rosenthal and Arlene Augenbraun will co-lead a discussion of “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah, a World War II novel, set in Nazi occupied France. It tells the story of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, who are separated by age, experience, location and circumstance, and follow different paths to survival. The novel is partly based on real historical figures. For instance, the story of Isabelle’s helping downed Allied airmen escape over the Pyrenees to Spain is based on the true account by a 19-year-old Belgian woman, who actually helped hundreds of men do just that. “The Nightingale” focuses on the sometimes overlooked actions of women inwartime, their suffering, determination and bravery in the face of unimaginable deprivation and cruelty. A popular read, “The Nightingale” has been on the NEWYORK TIMES and NPR best seller lists for many weeks. It will soon be made into a mottiioonn ppiiccttuurre.
