At NYC Health + Hospitals/
Coney Island, the beginning
of fall means the start
of a well-coordinated effort
across the hospital to raise
money for Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer. Just
like safety and patient experience
requires every department
to play a role, so does Coney
Island Hospital’s breast
cancer fundraising efforts.
Spearheaded by Patricia
Roman, Senior Associate Director
of Patient Relations
and Kathleen Terrio Coordinating
Manager, Enterprise
IT Services, the hospital’s efforts
began during the hot
summer months. As honorary
speakers at the Making
Strides Brooklyn kickoff at
New York Aquarium in August,
Dr. Ashrei Bayewitz and
Community Advisory Board
Chair Rosanne De Gennaro
addressed participants and
shared their personal stories.
Concurrently, staff in appropriate
roles began “Casual
Fridays”, where for a small
donation staff were permitted
to wear jeans to work.
A highlight of Coney Island
Hospital’s Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer campaign
each year is the “Pink
Wednesday” series. Over a
course of seven Wednesdays,
various departments run
food sales, raffles and merchandise
sales leading up to
the Making Strides Brooklyn
Walk on October 20.
“Staff, patients and families
alike enjoy our Pink
Wednesday events, and truly
come together to show their
generosity in hopes to one day
find a cure,” said Ms. Roman,
whose department raised
more than $6,000 in a single
day. “It’s a labor of love, and it
is truly heartwarming to see
individuals touched by breast
cancer in some way, work collaboratively
for the cause.”
Additionally, NYC Health
+ Hospitals/Coney Island
hosted two new fundraising
events this year: Strike Out
Breast Cancer and Bowling
for a Cure.
MCU Park, which is the
site of Making Strides Brooklyn,
hosted Strike Out Cancer
night. More than 100 staff
members and their families
attended a Brooklyn Cyclones
game against the Vermont
Lake Monsters, and the Cyclones
donated a portion of
the ticket sales back to the
hospital’s Making Strides efforts.
“The Brooklyn Cyclones
and MCU Park were fantastic
hosts, and went above and beyond
to promote the hospital’s
efforts,” said Ms. Terrio, who
coordinated the event. “It was
fantastic to see our staff and
their families come together
for a fun night and a great
cause in the community in
which we serve.”
The hospital’s pharmacy
department hosted a bowling
tournament last month
at Shell Lanes. Following a
spirted competition, a first
place trophy was awarded to
the winning team, while proceeds
were donated to Making
Strides Brooklyn.
