OBITUARY
Florence Gloger
Passed Sunday August 1 2021, Interred Wednesday
August 4th, Baron Hirsh Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
Florence Gloger, born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents, was known
by all as Faye, or in her younger days by her Yiddish name Fegie, which
means bird, corresponding to the Hebrew name Tziporah. Her father,
Jacob, arriving in the States as a young adult, was born in what was then
Austria, and her mother Minnie, or Shprinza, was born in Galicia, Polish
Austria. It was her father's second marriage, so Faye was the baby of the
family, step-sister to Marty, Benny, and Pearl.
After Faye's mother passed, she took on the role of carer and
homemaker for her father. But she was also an accomplished working
woman, having worked for financial services company, Janney
Montgomery Scott, for over 50 years where she was highly valued as a
dedicated employee.
Faye did not marry nor have children of her own, but she doted on her
nieces who, despite distance, remained connected throughout her life.
Eileen spoke to her regularly from Florida, and Mimi less regularly, but
when visiting the States from Israel, a pilgrimage to Aunt Faye in
Brooklyn was always first priority. Two of Mimi's grandchildren also had
the privilege of meeting Aunt Faye on their Bar Mitzva trips to the States.
Lisa, their mother, said it was always a fun highlight of the trip. While
Eileen, and her daughter Sharon, would visit from Florida, and
Virginia/Oregon and now Turkey, respectively, it was Eileen’s son Marc
who was the nearest family member in New Jersey, and would call and
take her to lunch, when Faye could go. He was the family’s Face-to-Face
contact continuing to help her anyway he could, including now. Finally, it
was Eileen’s dog, Digby, who visited her once with Eileen, who delighted
her and whose mention by her, created her laughter on each weekly
phone call.
Our family is deeply grateful to Gwen, Debbie and Terry who helped
care for Faye over the last 25 years and were both companion/friend and
carers. Your devotion was beyond bounds.
So what was our Aunt Faye like? She was funny and liked to laugh, and
her ready, hearty laugh was contagious. She didn't mince words, and
always "told it like it was". She was warm and giving. In her later days she
was afflicted with arthritis which kept her in pain and challenged every
movement, and she openly expressed how she felt, being open and
honest rather than "putting a pretty face" on things.
Faye was an individual, an independent woman before it was trendy,
warm, loving and giving.
She will be deeply missed. Although departed physically, “Faye you
are loved and will always be with us.”
