COURIER LIFE, JANUARY 14-20, 2022 25
It’s named after one of
the most beautiful cities in
the world, and the customer
feedback is that, “There is no
store like this!”
Milano Market in Bay
Ridge opened on Election Day,
and celebrated its grand opening
the first weekend of December,
with local politicians
present for the festivities.
It’s a shop that carries it
all, including domestic and
imported products from Italy
- cheeses, pastas, and chocolates.
There’s fresh mozzarella,
super-sized sandwiches,
cold cuts, soups, prepared
food, hot and cold catering,
and delicious cakes and pastries.
The family-owned shop
may be new to Bay Ridge,
but Milano Market has been
around for 40 years, with
stores in Manhattan that
have served loyal customers
for decades.
Husband and wife Michele
and Salvatore Galofaro
opened their first market in
1982, in the Flatiron District
of Manhattan. Four years
later, they opened another
one on the Upper East Side,
which still stands today. Both
the Manhattan location and
the Bay Ridge store are “mom
and pop” shops, run with the
help of family, including the
couple’s four daughters.
One of its top-selling specialty
sandwiches is the
Milano Special, stacked with
ham, salami, ham capicola,
mortadella, provolone, lettuce,
tomato, and roasted peppers,
drizzled with oil and
vinegar, served on a semolina
hero. Created by Michele 40
years ago, it remains a customer
favorite to this day.
Another is The Sicilian,
packed with mozzarella, fresh
ricotta, mixed greens, pistachio
pesto, and rosemary,
served on a Ciabatta roll. “It’s
big in Sicily,” says Michele.
Prior to the pandemic, the
family traveled to Italy every
year, perusing sandwich
shops in cities like Milan and
Florence, taking home ideas
and specialty items.
While traditions of old
world Italy are evident in
many of their prepared specialty
dishes, the great melting
pot of New York City fare
is always simmering on its
stoves, too. Customers come
in for pastrami, corned beef,
empanadas, New Orleansstyle
Jambalaya, and Spanish
and Mexican cuisine.
There are hot heroes such
as corned beef with Swiss,
Cole slaw, and Russian dressing,
on rye; and Cuban sandwiches
with roast pork, ham,
Swiss, pickles, garlic, and
mustard on Portuguese rolls.
Enjoy meatless sandwiches,
wraps, and hot sandwiches
comprised of fresh leg
of lamb, with
Feta cheese, tomato, hot
peppers, red onions, oregano,
and herb mayo, served on a
hero.
Or, Black Angus with fresh
mozzarella, broccoli rabe,
and chipotle aioli, served on
a hero.
Patrons can also build their
own sandwiches with breaded
eggplant, maple glazed turkey,
shell steak, brisket of beef,
Sopressatta, salami, grilled
vegetables, smoked salmon,
Cajun chicken, and so much
more. Top these scrumptious
ingredients with sprouts, avocado,
roasted or hot peppers,
sun-dried tomatoes, olives,
artichokes, or Cole slaw to
bring a sandwich to extraordinary
heights.
Milano Market offers gift
baskets. Send a Breakfast Basket
brimming with muffins,
Danish, scones, croissants,
bagels, butter, cream cheese,
and jam. Or maybe a Milano’s
Best, offering a selection of
some of Milano Market’s finest
products.
Michele says they are
thrilled to be in Bay Ridge,
and one of the many challenges
during the pandemic
has been that they are shortstaffed.
“Be patient with us.”
