Concert Pianist Xuerong “Kyra” Zhao dazzles audience
– As She Evokes Deep Emotion Through Performance and Education
By Jennifer Aline Graham
International concert pianist, “Kyra” Dr. Xuerong Zhao,
has undeniable talent recognized and praised by the public,
legendary musicians and world-renown music critics. Said to
be “ A born performer…” by music critic Harris Goldsmith. “She
has extraordinary technique” by pianist, Music and More Festival
director Harold Lewin. Legendary pianist Martha Agerich called
her performance “brilliant and expressive”. Dr. Zhao awes crowds
both virtually and in person as live performances return after the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Phenomenal Concerts, Phenomenal Musician
Zhao recently performed a live concert at the Lancaster
International Piano Festival, one of the largest piano events in
the world where top-notch musicians showcase their skills. This
year, LIPF celebrates its 10th anniversary. Festival artistic director,
Dr.Xun Pan invited world famous musicians such as concert pianist
Boris Berman, head of the Yale University piano department and
many others. Dr.Zhao was among this prestigious crowd. She was
invited to perform a whole concert on July 19th in celebration of
the festival.
“I felt extremely honored and grateful to perform this concert
on LIPF’s closing night,” says Zhao. “It is a privilege to be in line
with so many great artists.”
Zhao looks forward to emotionally connecting with her audience
during her upcoming Mozart concert organized by WPTA USAMissouri
concert series on August 29. Joining her concert will be
some famous pianists and pedagogues Kyu Butler, president and
WPTA Artist Director, and Victor Rosenbaum, who had been teaching
at New England Conservatory, Mannes College of Music, and Longy
School of Music for more than 4 decades.
“Kyra” Xuerong Zhao, a multi-award winning pianist, has
already achieved international renown at a very young age, after
winning the Chopin Competition in Rome, Seattle International
Piano Competition and many other competitions, she was invited
to perform in many great concert halls throughout the world,
including the New York Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Seiji Ozawa
Hall, Koussevittzky Shed and many others. She always earns
overwhelming success after her performance.
“I cannot wait to be going back to perform live on a regular
basis again,” says Zhao.
“I have been performing virtual concerts, online talks and
interviews during the lockdown which was wonderful and
meaningful to share music through the virtual platform. But now,
it feels very emotional to start performing live again. I want to
share the beauty and the strength of the divine music” says Zhao.
“Continuously Challenge Herself”
As one of the youngest piano faculty members at the world
famous New England Conservatory School of Preparatory. Dr. Zhao
constantly feels that rush of adrenaline to push through stigma
and educate others through music and master class education. She
believes it is critical to sculpt the next generation of musicians in a
more innovative and motivated way. She enjoys challenging herself
through programming diverse repertoires and exploring many
different styles, including some “new music”. She also encourages
her students to be ready for entering the big stages– no matter
the level or age – and teaches them to both love music and be
motivated by it.
“Suffering from the pandemic, I want to heal people and make
my audience feel positive after listening to the music I play,” says
Zhao. “It is also an educational mission for me to help pass on the
legacy of those great composer’s music to the younger generation.”
With a series of prestigious education, Zhao earned a BM and
MM in Piano Performance from Mannes College of Music from NYC
with full scholarship awarded, and an Artist Diploma from Yale
University School of Music on full tuition covered by the school. She
recently earned her Doctor Of Musical Arts from Boston University.
Zhao understands the importance of education. Inspired by many
of her own world-renowned professors. Zhao takes her own
educational experiences with her as she teaches and supports
the next generation – whether they be in her master classes or
listening to her perform piano during a concert.
W.A. Mozart Complete Piano Sonatas 5 in celebration the great
