
Harlem celebrates National Night Out
The 32nd Precinct celebrated its National Night Out Against Crime in Washington Heights.

The New York City Police
Department’s 28th precinct
in Harlem held their annual
National Night in front of the Adam
Clayton Powell State Offi ce Building
on 125th street on Tuesday, Aug. 3,
as felony crime within the precinct’s
jurisdiction continues to trend up.
According to the NYPD’s most
recent statistics, overall felony crime
in the precinct is up 15% percent for
the year with 552 reported felonies as
compared to 478 at this time late year.
Of these felony crimes, reported
grand larcenies has seen a 21%
increase with 205 incidents reported
thus far this year as compared to 169 at
this time last year. Felony assaults have
jumped from 111 at this time last year
to 135 this year - a 21% increase, and
robberies are up from 73 to 88, a 20%
increase.
There have also been 17 shooting
incidents compared to just 9 last year,
an 88% increase.
That said, the Night Out featured
a number of prominent lawmakers
who celebrated the work local police
are doing, and that fostering a good
relationship between police and the
community they serve is crucial.
“This is a night out against crime,”
said U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat
(D-Manhattan/Bronx). “This is the
heart and soul of our community.”
“This is that one day that we receive
in our calendar to thank the community
for your role in keeping us safe and
together and particularly during this
last very, very diffi cult 18 months,” said
Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance
Jr. was also in attendance.
The precinct also gave away six free
bikes in a raffl e to kids at the event.
There was live music performed by a
plethora of music artists along with
free food.
The event also provided vaccinations
and free STD and HIV testing to
anyone. Several police offi cers received

awards for their service as well.
“This is what community solutions
looks like,” said Commanding Offi cer
Andres Brown. “We can’t do it alone,
you can’t do it alone. We want to give
the community back for everyone to
enjoy.”
Summer Stage events will be held at
the same location every Thursday from
August 5-26.
