Happy February, readers!
The second month of the year means a lot of things -
Black History Month, Groundhog Day and one month closer
to warm weather. Here at LIC Courier, we’ve been working
hard to churn up some stories from your neighborhoods that
we know you’ll love.
This month in real estate, we give you an inside look at
a penthouse in a Long Island City condo called CORTE.
Designed by Dieguez Fridman and Beyer Blinder Belle, the
$1.585 million penthouse features clean lines and a simple
layout. We also explore the complete overhaul of the New
York Housing Authority (NYCHA) across the five boroughs
and look into an approved piece of legislation that will help
seniors feel some relief from their property taxes.
In our community news section, we find out that LIC is the
second healthiest neighborhood in the city and check out one
lawmaker’s plan to bring solar power to schools in Astoria
and LIC. Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza
announced that over 25 schools across Queens are getting
dual-language pre-K programs, including the city’s first French,
Haitian-Creole, Hebrew and Japanese pre-K programs.
Our features are exciting as ever in February. After eight
long months of waiting, Long Island City’s newest eatery
The Sandwich King has opened its doors to hungry custom-ers.
Read how the owner Nick Giovanniello first got into the
business and how he came up with the store’s name. Long
Island City Artists at The Plaxall Gallery are presenting a new
show called L.I. Centric. The show features photographic and
drawn portraits of locals and gives viewers a feel for what the
neighborhood is all about.
We explore the world of politics and introduce you to the
11 candidates running for the office of public advocate.
Councilman Costa Constantinides discusses his plans for
how to make Rikers Island more eco-friendly and see which
Astoria advocate Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
took as her honored guest to the recent State of the Union.
Our art and events calendars have some local events and
cool exhibits for you to see, try or experience, so get out there
and check them out! If you have any tips or news you would
like to share with us, reach out to me at jbagcal@qns.com.
See you back here in March!

Hello, LIC Courier readers!
Fall is in the air, so I hope you’re ready to kick off my favorite
season with some exciting Western Queens news and stories.
This month’s issue of the magazine is dedicated to Modern
Space’s 10th Anniversary. President, CEO and co-founder Eric
Benaim, shares the story of the company’s humble beginnings
in 2008 to finding success in the present.
Check out the new stuff happening in Western Queens
this month. The NYC Ferry Service just launched a route
that will take riders from Long Island City to the Lower East
side in 30 minutes. In Astoria, a local yoga studio is offering
two new classes for parents and their children and one for
Spanish speakers.
Sunnyside Shines is hosting their 6th annual restaurant
week running from September 23rd through the 29th. See
the full list of participating local restaurants, including De
Mole, Pete’s Grill and Sotto Le Stelle.
Speaking of food, a new Indian canteen opened up on
Thomson Avenue in Long Island City in September. Read
about the tasty, authentic and most importantly, “unapologetic”
cuisine that they’re serving up.
September brings with it some exciting community news.
The renowned music teaching institution Sage Music has
returned to Long Island City; a group of college students
developed an app to help you find halal food wherever you
are; a NYC councilman celebrated the installation of traffic
signals at a local Sunnyside school.
In our Features section, we profiled health and fitness coach
Michelle Cady from LIC, who talks about her new book ‘Self-
Care in the City’. The book gives big city dwellers tips and
tricks about how to take care of their minds, bodies and spirits.
As always, we have some fun suggestions for local events
and art exhibits to attend. If you have any tips or news you
would like to share with us, reach out to me at jbagcal@qns.com.
Have a great September!
