BY JILL DAVIS
The National Retail Federation conducts a consumer
survey every year to see how much people are
planning to spend for Valentine’s Day. They report
that consumers will spend a whopping $23.9 billion
on the holiday this year, up from $21.8 billion in
2021.
They also ask what people are will be shelling out
their money for. “While traditional Valentine’s Day
gifts like candy and flowers seem to never go out of
style, gift givers and recipients alike are more comfortable
heading out for a special meal or participating
in a new experience than they were a year ago,”
Prosper Insights Executive Vice President of Strategy
Phil Rist said. “This is especially true among younger
age groups.”
However, the jewelry industry looks like it will
be pretty happy too. Total spending on jewelry is
estimated to total $6.2 billion, up from $4.1 billion in
2021 and the highest in the survey’s history.
Not to burst anyone’s Valentine’s Day bubble, but
here are a few love-related quotes to keep things in
perspective:
“I was married by a judge. I should’ve asked for a
jury.” – Groucho Marx
“You can’t buy love, but you can pay heavily for
it.” – Henny Youngman
“Honesty is the key to a relationship. If you can
fake that, you’re in.” – Richard Jenni
“Love: A temporary insanity curable by marriage.”
– Ambrose Bierce
“My wife was afraid of the dark. Then she saw me
naked and now she’s afraid of the light.” – Rodney
Dangerfield
And now, here are some ideas for the holiday and
the rest of cold February. Have fun!
