St. John’s men’s soccer eliminated
BY ZACHARY GEWELB
The nationally-ranked St.
John’s men’s soccer team’s
magical season came to an end
last weekend.
The No. 16 Johnnies saw
their NCAA Tournament run
come to an end in the third
round on Nov. 30 when they
were eliminated after falling
3-0 to No. 1-ranked Virgina.
Virginia opened the scoring
in the third minute of action,
when Andreas Ueland scored
his first of two goals. Nine minutes
later, the Red Storm had
a chance to score when Skage
Simonsen navigated his way
through Virginia’s defense and
passed to an open Jared Juleau,
who headed the ball over the
goal post.
Shortly after, Virginia increased
its lead to 2-0 when,
after a corner kick, Ueland took
the ball through the teeth of the
Johnnies’ defense and fired it
into the back of the net.
UVA took a 3-0 advantage
later in the half, this time off a
penalty kick by Joe Bell.
Keeper Luka Gavran and
the Johnnies’ defense buckled
down in the second half, but
the offense failed to score and
Virginia held on for the 3-0 victory.
Despite the loss, St. John’s
still has a lot to be proud of this
season.
The Johnnies opened the
season on a 7-0 run and finished
with a record of 14-5-1 — the 14
wins are tied for the team’s
highest total since the 2008 College
Cup campaign of 2008. And
all five of the their losses came
