The community convened
at the Christopher Street
Pier and marched to the
Stonewall Inn on June
12 to honor the 49 people who were
killed at the Pulse nightclub massacre
in Orlando fi ve years ago.
Individuals stood as “Human
Beings” representing each of the
people who died in the shooting on
June 12, 2016 when 29-year-old
Omar Mateen opened fi re at Pulse
during a Latinx night. The “humans”
each held a photo and biography
of a person who died.
Ahead of the vigil, Congress
moved to designate the Pulse
nightclub as a national memorial.
The legislation passed the
House of Representatives last
month and cleared the US Senate
this month. The legislation in the
upper chamber, led by Republican
Senator Rick Scott of Florida
— who previously served as
governor — passed unanimously
in the Senate on June 10, while
Congressmember Darren Soto of
Florida carried the bill through
the House last month. The bill
is co-sponsored in the Senate by
Democrat Alex Padilla of California
and Republican Marco Rubio
of Florida. It now goes to President
Joe Biden’s desk.
The onePULSE Foundation,
a non-profi t building memorials
in honor of the victims of the attack,
applauded the backing of the
venue as a national memorial. “We
are thrilled that the US Senate
passed the bill designating Pulse
nightclub as a national memorial,”
Pulse Orlando wrote in a statement
on Facebook. “This recognition
from both the House and Senate
means so much to the LGBTQ+
community.”
